I have a 3 day pass for Austin City Limits and am looking forward to flying over the pond for the festival, visiting the city etc.
Turns out Phish are headlining the Friday and as a Brit I have little idea of what to expect as they are all but unknown over here. They seem a massive live draw in the USA so I guess they must be pretty good? Or are they some acquired taste? I am a bit of a DMB fanboi so know what a 'jam band' gets up to, but listening to 'Billy Breathes' and 'Joy' for instance, although they are good albums there's none of that "demand to be listened to" vibe you get from a DMB album... at least I reckon.
Still, am looking foward to seeing them and no doubt they'll be excellent in Austin.
You lot are discerning music lovers 8) - what's your take on Phish?

Not a Fan and probably won't even bother with them when I am at ACL. In order to get anywhere close to the stage for the headliners you have to spend all day at that stage. I'm not willing to do that with so much else to see. I may swing by to see what its all about, but I find their music pretty boring.
Some other great stuff at ACL though. Not to interested in any of the Headliners this year.

Here's some advice from a Tragically Hip, DMB, and Phish fan:
First off, don't expect a concert anything like a DMB concert. DMB concerts are much closer to Hip concerts, while Phish is a jam band and every one of their concerts are completely different. They don't have much studio stuff worth listening to, so it can be a bit daunting getting into their stuff. Regardless, do yourself a favour a check out the Phish gig if you can. It may blow your mind, or you it might not be your thing... you won't know unless you give it a try! I saw them 5 times last year and they blew me away each time (although I'll admit the five concerts I went to are generally regarded by Phish fans as the best five of the year.) The Phish vibe at big festivals can be lame compared to the vibe at a normal Phish gig or a Phich-only festival. That being said, last year at Bonnaroo Festival Phish played a couple songs with Bruce Springsteen, so who knows, you may get a treat?

I am not a Phish fan by any measure but I have seen them live a couple of times. I would say you should check them out and get your dance on. It really is a very American experiance. The big downer at Phish shows are the stinky trustafarians (wealthy trust fund kids who play Hippy). As for Muse, I saw them in Seattle a fue weeks back and they were great. I think it was the best arena show I have seen in years

Phish. I have tried and tried and tried. But I just don't get it.
And that surprises the hell outta me because I love so many other bands of the same influence/style.
It sounds dumb to say about a Jam band, but there is just a "flow" missing in their music to me.

Yeah, the silver sun pickups were great. i thought they might not pull it off but they nailed all the vocals live. The bitch was all the 13 year old girls at the show.
