[Smiling Stranger]

The Weakerthans new DVD-CD “Live at the Burton Cummings Theater,” set for release on March 23, offers a jubilant testament to the Winnipeg band’s considerable creative powers as both literary minded songwriters and charismatic live performers. The live DVD was recorded in April of 2009 as the band toured in support of their album “Reunion Tour” with an expanded line-up featuring trumpet, violin and female vocals, playing songs from all four acclaimed releases in front of an adoring and enthusiastic hometown crowd. Even the DVD-CD’s artwork is a painting by bassist Greg Smith, one of several pieces inspired while on the April tour. From the songs to the live performance to the visual presentation, all in all, the DVD-CD captures moments in time. A musical experience shared by a band and thier fans.

Man, I cant wait.

I really love to hear some new stuff. But a live Cd is sure to be great.

God I miss seeing this band live. It has been a few years now, and needless to say that this is a F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C live album!

Probably wasn't the best idea to listen to it while trying to write a paper on a deadline...

The songs sound excellent, but I have to say I was surprised by the lack of apparent energy at the show when watching the DVD ... is that what a typical Weakerthans show is like ... John K. Samson doesn't seem to have much interaction with the crowd or stage presence, rather he just steps up and sings and plays guitar really well.

He gets more into it during the faster songs, but he's always been a pretty low key guy and he's certainly no Gord Downie in terms of audience interaction. The energy seems to come more from his bandmates. But there's always something really special about seeing the Weakerthans live. Maybe it's just the songs themselves, I don't know. Usually I prefer shows with a higher energy level (the Hip, Wilco, Pearl Jam, etc...), but over the years I've seen these guys probably 9 or 10 times, and I'd go see them again in a heartbeat. To me they're a national treasure.

They have been posting different deals all day on their fb fan page about buying the album and downloading it.
I think I am finally going to cave in and just buy the 2LP/DVD from their website. I love this band way to much to not own something by them.

Speaking of, anyone heard there 5 track iTunes Live Session EP. It's really stripped down/acoustically done and it's really interesting a few of their songs done like in that manner.

Agreed. I got a review copy in the mail yesterday, and while watching it I was struck by how boring the whole thing looked. Almost as if the band was just going through the motions. A little surprising for a hometown show...John K. is indeed a national treasure in terms of his songwriting abilities, but live, I just don't think they have it. I thought the same thing after seeing them in Vancouver on that tour, too.
