Patterson Hood- Murdering Oscar (and other love songs)
#1

All you Drive-By Truckers fans should check this out. Brilliant album! I've only listened to it twice through, and it's already made it's way into my top 5 for 2009. It's not much of a departure from his work in the Truckers, but the songs are just so bloody fantastic, it doesn't really matter what style they're played in. I'm amazed that some of these songs never made it onto any DBT records, but I suppose with a band that includes three songwriters, not all his stuff is going to make the cut. On a related note, I also picked up the Truckers' "Live in Austin Texas" CD/DVD combo, which is equally awesome. Hood also mentions on their website that they have a rarities/B-sides album coming out in September, and they're already in the studio working on the next official DBT album. Damn I love how quickly these guys work. What a great band.

Here's a cool song-by-song write up by Hood on his solo album:

I too picked up the DC/DVD combo at Future Shop for like $14. Why won't they come to Calgary?

I'll check out the Hood solo stuff right away

As far as I know, the only time they've ever played here was for last year's Sled Island festival. Unfortunately I was out of town for that one, otherwise I would've been there, front row centre with my elbows resting on the stage. I'm dying to see those guys live.

I knew about it, but just couldn't make it happen, especially for what I knew would be a really short set. I would've preferred to drive to Edmonton for a full show, but they can canceled it. I guess I'll have to make a road trip

They did a co-headlining tour with The Hold Steady earlier this year, which would have been amazing. The closest city they played was Seattle. Somehow I managed to miss that one too.
