...and Honey Watson, I struggle on.
#1

Three months-ish after We Are The Same has been released.

I think Now The Struggle Has A Name could quite possibly be one of the best Hip songs I've ever heard. Everything about it kicks my ass. I guess consider this an "appreciation" thread. When the chorus kicks back in after the final verse, it's pure Hip bliss for me. I can't pick between this and The Depression Suite... but I was far more impressed with Struggle live than the Suite. Together though, they make one of the best 1, 2 punches I've heard on a Hip record for a long time.

With songs like this, I would not mind if it was announced tomorrow that the next Hip studio album will be produced by Bob Rock. A trilogy if you will.

...and Honey Watson, I struggle on!

i completely agree - loved this song from the first time i heard it. i never could understand people saying they don't like it - what's not to like?

I'm with ya! :thumb:

From what I have seen, the main reason people didn't like it was because they felt it was too long, rather than not a good song.

All I'm hearin' is youuuuuuuu

These guys were talking about it. I have no clue if they are correct:

Thinking back to the Hipbase & Hipfans Compilation from a few years back, I remember Sean almost using this exact same line to describe Penguin, I do believe.

Now, I never thought Sean would ever put anything in between him and that devotion to the egg; but, well... let's just put a pin in that for now.

I'm pretty sure it's Connie Watson.

The song's catchy but I find it so overblown that it's hard to enjoy.

Yes. Between the strings, the cheesy power chords leading into the chorus, and the highly anthemic chorus itself, It's the 'overblown' quality that turns me off. It's basically a U2 song, and if you like U2's histrionic, anthemic - not say slightly ridiculous - style, then you'll like this. I'm leery of that sort of thing myself.

What saves it, for me, is precisely the obscure 'Honey Watson' reference and the song's refusal to pin itself down. Typical of Downie to avoid an unambiguous anthemic statement of the U2 variety. So it's U2 filtered through the Gordon Downie treatement, which I do find interesting.

I like the song OK and more often than not, don't skip it. But I wouldn't want an entire album of this, that's for sure.

Just listened to it again. Don't like it. You this and depression are the best songs they've written? I think the are the worst. To me the only thing good about them is the production.
What really annoys me is they open with depression most night. A 9 min opening song.

I think I like different things from the hip. It's music so whatever speaks to you is yours

I also like Hush so go figure. Chris hates that song haha
