My family (me, my wife, 5 year old daughter, 18 month old son) booked a 2 week all inclusive vacation to Mazatlan a little over a month ago. We got a great deal and were very excited about it. We were supposed to leave this past Monday. Last Wednesday/Thursday when this whole swine flu deal came to life, we got slightly nervous. Then over the weekend we got more nervous as they WHO raised the pandemic level. You see the thing is, our son has had a compromised immune system since the day he was born. It seems he gets sick every month or so with either a cold or flu. He had even more serious immune problems when he was younger. On Sunday night we phoned Westjet to see if we could switch to another destination and they told us it wasn't possible. Had a bad sleep Sunday night, woke up Monday, packed the car and headed off to the airport. On the way my wife phoned Westjet again and right as we pulled up to the airport, we found out they changed their policy and would allow us to switch to anywhere they flew. We are now heading to the Domican on May 9th and very grateful to Westjet for doing that for us.

If this were just my wife and I we would have gone for sure, but would any of you want to take your young kids into a situation that could put them in potential danger like that? It would probably have amounted to nothing, but what if either of them got sick and we could have prevented it by not going? It was the plane ride home that had us the most nervous...recirculated air and all.

I would have done the same thing Billy.

While I think the media has blown this thing miles out of proportion (surprise, surprise), you just can't take any chances when your child's health is at risk.

1. The media and WHO have blown this way out of proportion.
2. That doesn't mean the risk isn't real.

Good on WestJet for allowing the change. In your place I might have cancelled my flight before they got around to it.

I agree on all accounts.

Right before we got word from Westjet that they would switch our trip, I asked my wife to make the decision to cancel or go because I didn't want to. My gut and head told me not to go but I wanted my wife to make the decision. She often says to me "First thought, best thought" so when I asked her to decide I told her to stick with first thought best thought and she said she didn't think we should go. Right after that we got word that Westjet would switch for us and now we're off to a much nicer resort in the Dominican for the exact same price. Perhaps Mazatlan will be next years trip.

Level 10's a bitch to get past..

I will not give up. My face is set,my gait is fast,my goal is heaven,my road is narrow,my way is rough,my companions are few,my guide is reliable,my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity,or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I will not give up,shut up or slow down....Blessed Be!

We have had a load of clinical bulletins from work about this, and how to deal with patients we are called to who may have 'Flu like symptoms'
We have had to make sure we have masks and aprons on the ambulances, and wear them if we are dealing with these people.

When you consider the number of people who die in the UK alone from complications arising from basic Flu, why is everyone getting there knickers in a twist about this?

And when you think, a relatively small number of people have contracted Swine Fever, and now we're all wearing masks, but millions have died from AIDS, and people still don't wear condoms..... Random...

Still picking up the elderly from the floor, still dealing with the drunks, now wrestling seals and posting it on twitter.. @richardilderton
'Whoops' is not a word the patient wants to hear...apparently

The Center for Disease Control:

The Center for Disease Control has issued a medical alert about a highly contagious, potentially dangerous virus that is transmitted orally, by hand, and even electronically.
This virus is called Weekly Overload Recreational Killer (WORK).
If you receive WORK from your boss, any of your colleagues or anyone else via any means whatsoever - DO NOT TOUCH IT!!! This virus will wipe out your private life entirely. If you should come into contact with WORK, you should immediately leave the premises.

Take two good friends to the nearest LCBO and purchase one or both of the antidotes - Work Isolating Neutralizer Extract (WINE) and Bothersome Employer Elimination Rebooter (BEER). Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

You should immediately forward this medical alert to five friends. If you do not have five friends, you have already been infected and WORK is controlling your life.

(yes I am bored at work, again)

Na - your beer is too expensive up there.
But I did stop at Duty Free on the way home that night and bought a 3-pack of Crown Royal for $60.
It was an email that must have been a forward from my fine friends up North.

(Dana, loving his $12.99 - 18-packs of Bud Light here in The States compared to $27.95 in Canada)
