Ontario Election
#1

Yes folks, I'm always bringing up politics, but this one shouldn't be ignored...I'm assuming there are a vast amount of eligible voters from Ontario in this forum, so I'm curious, who watched the leaders debate tonight? Who is everyone's preference? (If you feel like divulging such information) I believe we need a change, big time, but I, like many others don't believe that Mr. McGuinty is the right man for the job. But hey, politics is the art of the possible, he may work. Myself being a student, the NDP party is the only party for me...so lets hear it folks!

Mats my man, that all depends on who you ask about the "havoc". The PC offers me nothing, NOTHING! And I'd hope the young peoples on here might agree.

Then that should just inspire you to work hard and become successful. You will then reep the benefits of being a legitimate performer in todays society.

I like the PC's because they do good things for me. The problem is there are not enough people like me around (That sounded arrogant, however).

I know that you are not...but just for second you sounded like the world owes you something. Let me repeat, I know that isn't your style but, if this country was not full of complainers, whiners, wannabes and chip bearers, then we would never hear the NDP mentioned.

With our immigration policies and the fact that we support every single lackie who decides he/she would rather snooze than work, maybe NDP is the right choice.

Be strong man, don't do it. Think of your future.

I myself would vote NDP, I like the fact they want to freeze rent for the next 2 years, they want to bring in $10 a day, daycare.
NDP is for the working class people.

I think your comment about people wanting to snooze rather then work is unfair. I am not going to get into this to much, but as we know everybody is delt a different hand in life. I have a feeling that you have grown up with lots of support and love in your life. Not everyone is this lucky. Do you agree that we should keep the minium wage at 6.85/hr.
Do you want to see our hospitals turned into private money making machines? Confusedcratch: This is one great thing about Canada, that the Tories would have no problem taking away! Do you want to see your child not getting as good of an education as the others because their parents have the money to put them in to private school? Yeah the rich should get a tax break for putting there child into private school? :rambo: This is bull shit!
Anyway sorry for the rant, but I believe that the PC government is for the rich! I have had enough!

But because I believe the NDP has no chance of getting in I am voting Liberal! OH God anyone but Eves! :rambo: If you want to look into the future look at the schools and hospital's in the US. (not bashing any of my friends to the south) but this is what the PC governement will bring you.
O god what will people do when they need to go to the doctor and can't afford to because they make 6.85 hr. Do we need to divide classes even more?

Mats and dyersbay, thankyou for your comments, I love this kind of stuff! Freedom of speech is without a doubt the best thing about democracy and Canada (Except for the obvious  ) so I totally respect both your opinions, and anyone else who has anything to say in this topic.

Ernie Eves, Mike Harris or any goon the PC's throw at us will not inspire me to work hard and become successful. I will work hard for myself, for my own happiness, and even then, something could happen in which I don't get all I "deserve". I worked my ass off in high school to get the marks I did, and I was fortunate enough to have parents who would also help me out to get where I am, in University. Mats, I would assume, but correct me if I'm wrong that you or some of your close friends attended post-secondary education. What if you, or what if I didn't have the help from my parents, but I still had the great marks and work ethic that I deserved to get into the post-secondary institution of my choice? Shouldn't everyone who has the ability to get into University be able to? We don't need to run through the long list of great brains that have come from un-privileged households but have benfitted the world in some way. And yes, I know Universities are a business, but you ask ANY Prof. out there which student they would much rather have-The student that has a half ass work ethic but pays his tuition and his parents dopnate to the school, OR the genius who came from parents who didn't care about him/her, but our Government helped him/her get there. It's any easy choice. And about being a legitimate performer-everyone has a place in society. Maybe the man serving us fast food every evening, maybe he's not legitimate in some people's eyes, but with the NDP he MAY have a chance of working to his full potential. There are great brains and great people out there that no one sees, because one thing makes the world go around, and that's money. And it shouldn't be that way, but according to the PC's, it should be. Tax breaks for seniors and those putting their children through private education? Give me a break. What about a tax break for the single mother who is trying to support children, so those children don't grow up unprivileged like you and I, mats. I hope I don't come off as sounding harsh too mats, but I believe very strongly in things like this. Keep voting PC and before you know it, EVERYTHING will be privatized. Auto insurance is CRAZY right now, and last night Howard Hampton admitted they made a mistake by not implementing standard Government auto-insurance when they had a chance. (On a side note, when was the last time one saw a politician being HONEST. I don't know about you, but I respect that) I know there is someone out there who has tried to get new auto insurance but was turned away because no one is accepting new clients. Privatization does not work. I know this is a long post-bear with me though.
Quote:But because I believe the NDP has no chance of getting in I am voting Liberal!
And people wonder why the Federal Liberals are STILL in power. I'm sorry dyersbay, but one CANNOT think like this. Democracy is a slow, very slow process. If everyone thinks like this, then we will never see change. Vote what you truly believe and want. 12 years ago, if someone would have said, the Liberals will be the next leaders of Ontario, you would have said "You're crazy!" But these things take time. A few more votes for the NDP now, then a few more in 2007, and maybe one day we'll see some real change. Falling in line with everyone else is what brought the PC's into power back in '95. The beauty of Canadian democracy is that there are many choices for your political voice. If we keep this up we'll end up with a simple two party system like they have to the sotuh of us. I believe America desperately needs Ralph nader, but will he ever have a chance? Doubtful. There are many choices for you, and for everyone, even if it's the extreme left or extreme right, but vote with what you believe, not with what everyone else believes, and chance is possible. Politics is the art of the possible. Don't forget that. I apologize if this was too long for some of your liking. But thankyou for listening. This concludes today's lecture.

I know what you mean Heron, and I agree with you! Big Grin
It's just that I HATE the Pc's so much that I would rather vote for the party that may win instead of one that has no chance. Look at the Bush/Gore deal. I know the race is not that close here, but what if it was, and my vote that went toward NDP could have won the election for the Liberals.
I'm telling you I can't suffer for another 4yrs if the tories get in! Cry
I think the race is something like this.

Liberal 55%
PC 31%
NDP 14%

It could be different now, I think this is from last week.
I wish that ndp was in the lead! :thumb:

Oh by the way...how do you do just the one quote thing?

Problem for the PCs is there leadership is weak with Eves at the helm. If Harris was there, he would win again. The Liberals will win this election and after all their promises cannot be met, the PCs will be back in power in 5 years.

As for the NDP, they are not a viable option. Look what they did to the province of BC. That province is now a have not province and takes transfer payments from the federal government.

I don't know why you would think Mike Harris was a good leader?
The guy was slime. He had to fake a retirement in order to save face due to the fiasco's he caused such as Ipperwash and Walkerton! :rambo:
I believe the Liberals will also win, and I can't see why they would not stay in power!

I think the NDP has a serious fixation with government being the way to correct social inequalities when history has shown that individual activism has changed peoples' minds about social issues...what really scares me is their complaints that American companies "control" 95 percent of the films screened in Canada when most of the films are made in Vancouver! What do they plan to do, have the government set limits of how many american films can be shown in Canada? Smacks of Big Brotherism. Their ideas about funding urban transit are very good because as any city dweller knows, it is a real pain in the ass to deal with the gridlock and finding parking spaces.

Harris retired primarly because he had marital problems. His wife left him in and around 2000.

I heard that also, this was what I believe was an excuse to leave. I also heard he wanted to spend time with his children.
The weight was coming down on him due to these problems, I believe that's why he left.
To much of a coincidence. I would say.

Quite the opposite effect, or perhaps, another question could be raised here. Not that I am taking a political stance by any means, but it may not necessarily be detrimental for the Cdn. govt to limit the amount of American films. Sure, if you are a capitalist then having Americans films their movies in Vancouver and Toronto sounds swell (in terms of revenue). If, however, you stop to think about the effects that American films have on Canadian culture and Canadian artists/filmakers/actors/writers/producers (etc), you may think again. American companies have forced Canada into a hole where we are too afraid to say "NO" to American films that permeate our culture and Industry. We rely on this income that we get from American movies being filmed in our cities. The reason there are not as many Cdn. filmakers or Cdn. films is because of the monopoly that Viacom and others have created (back when film was becomming a popular medium) and Canadian producers are not successful in terms of distribution.

American media companies control distribution, and in all honesty, it has led Canadians to believe that "Canada doesn't make good movies." Less than 5% of the films in theatres are Canadian... to me, this is a sad state of affairs. Think about Cdn. music and the bad rap it gets, CBC shows, Cdn. magazines.... etc
Film is an important cultural industry, and we should not allow American money/large media conglomerates bully us into suppressing Canadian talent. I say, keep your damn money American film companies!! :rambo:
What is more important? The money or the promotion of Cdn. talent and Cdn. culture? Confusedcratch:

I think the problem has more to do with peoples' taste in films and music, i would say around 60 percent of the american and canadian population wants films, TV shows and music to entertain them, make them enter a fantasy realm and don't care if the content they are watching is thought provoking or culturally important. Sure, every once in awhile they might pay attention to something Ken Burns produces or Riverdance but the bottom line is thats what they want.i dont know what you are talking about with Viacom, a little info would be greatly appreciated. my biggest question is why should government get more involved in regulating how much Canadian content is on the radio or TV? To me its like telling the government that we dont have any free will to change the channel or find music that has more meaning and value to us. That's what the internet is for, baby! :rambo:
