"Heather Ross, 18, was crowned "Queen of the Furrows," an annual pageant that takes place at the Dundas Agricultural fair. The contestants sport evening wear and are asked impromptu questions, but in a unique turn they must also exhibit a high degree of skill riding a tractor, and plowing.

"Most of the girls don't know how to ride a tractor until the day before, when we get training. It's the most Island thing possible," said Ross.

Ross started a Facebook group called "Beauty versus Industry" earlier this year, which encourages members to define beauty in their own terms.

There's no contradiction between her fashion industry campaign and being crowned Queen of the Furrows, she said."

The 2008 International Plowing Match was held in Teeswater, Ontario this past September and I had to cover one day of it as part of a "story sharing" agreement we have with other papers in our area. As an aside, I debate the "International" aspect of the IPM as every event it seems in the last 25 years has been in Ontario - but I digress.

The morning I chose to cover was the Queen of the Furrows contest. My recent ex-girlfriend, an equestrian and soon to equine Vet, was charming in her assessment of the talent, after my assessment of them via telephone (which went "not a looker in the bunch" or something eerily similar). "The Queen of the Furrows is the bitch of the ditch."

Oh those lovers of agriculture and life on the farm. They have a phrase for everything.

That said, seeing the Hip have written and recorded a song titled Queen of the Furrows leaves me nearly as giddy as when I found out Sam Roberts did a track called An American Draft Dodger in Thunder Bay.

Cheers,

Pat

If this isn't the chorus then it should be.
