I know this should probably be in the NHL thread, but this was too hilarious to be clumped in with other things.

I think the Leafs should send the Canucks a thank you card for taking over the title of "Most Laughable Team in Canada".

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Goalies being leaders of a team, but this is nothing but Luongo being a figurehead. He can't talk to refs, wear a letter, or take ceremonial face-offs....

Whats wrong with this? I think this is awesome, if he's the leader he should wear the 'C'. It's unfortunate he can't wear the C on his jersey, if Jason Varitek can, i think Luongo should be able to as well.

Really important things there, eh? That ceremonial face-off is a determining factor in games and such. As far as talking to the refs, you don't have to wear the "C" to talk with officials these days. Pretty much anyone can discuss "issues" during a game, it seems.

But, I understand why you brought this up. To my knowledge, it hasn't happened before and it does seem odd. Maybe they should have just given Mitchell or Kesler the "C" and been more conventional about it. Either way, the Canucks look like they'll struggle on offense again this year and not be a true Cup contender.

The NHL has only had five goaltenders be captains. The first one was John Ross Roach of the Toronto St. Patricks during the 1924-25 season. George Hainsworth of the Montreal Canadiens (1932-33), Charlie Gardiner of the Black Hawks (1933-34), Bill Durnan of the Canadiens (later half of 1947–48), and Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks (2008-present) are the other four.

Prior to the 1948-49, the NHL made a change to the rules prohibiting goalies from being captains. This was due to Bill Durnan leaving his crease to argue calls with the referees far too frequently. Opposing teams said this gave the Canadiens unscheduled timeouts during strategic points during games. This became known as the "Durnan Rule". Because of this rule, goalies cannot wear the "C". While the Canucks have named Luongo the captain for the 2008-09 season, typical captain duties have been delegated to other players. Willie Mitchell will deal with the officials on a nightly basis and Mattias Ohlund will deal with any ceremonial aspects of the position such as pre-game faceoffs.

This has nothing to do with on ice stuff, it has everything to do with off ice stuff.

Besides it is a fact that goalies are the smartest guys on the team..... other than Patrick Roy. This is of course coming from a goalie.

There was talk Patrick Roy was going to be named captain of the Habs after Carbonneau was traded in 93, they ended up going with Kirk Muller. I remember Jaques Demers saying he was considering giving it to Roy though.
