Kings of Leon- Only By the Night
#1

I didn't know much about these guys other than the fact that they opened for Pearl Jam on their '06 tour. I've always heard good things about them so I decided to buy their new album last night on a whim. It's pretty damn good. I can definitely hear a big U2 influence, mostly due to Caleb Fallowill's soaring vocals and some of the guitar sounds they use. But at the same time they also have a unique sound all their own. I like it.

Aha Shake Heartbreak, their '05 release is a bit of brilliance. But Only By The Night is a certifiable hunk of garbage. There's nothing original on the album, furthermore it's straight up boring. It borders on adult contempo; if anyone's listened to their lyrics, you'll know on this new record he sings in an Art Alexis, "Here's exactly what I'm thinking, void of a single metaphor" style. Boring, boring, boring. If anyone cares (Which you most certainly don't) I wrote a more detailed review on my blog.

That album is a serious bummer.

I couldn't disagree more. But hey, to each their own.

If you hear their earlier records, it's possible you'll see where I'm coming from. This is the sound of a band that has lost their edge. Which is ironic, considering how much every guitar record on this record sounds like The Edge.

I agree the guitars on this album are very U2-esque. But I think it's a really cool record. I like the songs, the arrangements, the melodies, and the singer has a great voice. Is it a masterpiece? No. But it's certainly far from boring. I like these guys, and I'll definitely be checking out the rest of their catalogue.

Well then they've done their work. You'll be pleasantly surprised with their first two records I'm sure.

I love that tune. Also check out "Cold Desert". Best song on the album in my opinion.

Their earlier ones are definitely stronger but the new one's not too shabby either.

I'm also a big fan of their first 2 albums, and I thought the last one was pretty decent as well.

I really like the album, but it is pretty clear that they're trying to head into arena rock territory. Not that that's neccessarily a bad thing.

I like these guys, and their stuff is great on the soundtracks I've seen them on, Entourage and Stuck on you...
