I'm a teacher at a school with uniforms; one of my gr. 12 students today said something that prompted me to say, "you should listen to the HIP, their lyrics are very dark, you'd like..." And she immediately stood up and opened her shirt revealing a Tragically Hip shirt she was wearing underneath!! I thought that was so awesome.

Some students that I had previously taught, mentioned to me that they had seen the HIP at Bluesfest this summer.

They are listening to their Rihanna and their Coldplay on their Ipods and Mp3 players and listening to the NEW HOT 89.9 that never plays the HIP despite songs like New Orleans Is Sinking (a song that got played at my school's PROM last year), Ahead By A Century, and In View being very pop- radio-friendly...

Parents, older siblings and teachers have a part, but if it was just that, then kids would be into all kinds of bands that we loved in the 80's and 90's but as a matter of fact, it only takes one listen to the HIP, and young ears can pick up on the power behind the music. I can't wait to see to what extent the new album pulls off some more younger conversions.

Awesome, and yet something that could have happened on The OC -- if the Hip were American.

I'm the adult chair with a youth group and at the concert we put on this summer, a similarly aged girl actually made her own Hip tank that emulated a cross between the gorilla tees from the IBE(I think) tour and something circa Roadside 95/97. It brought a smile to my jaded face. Maybe the kids do get it.

I've literally had it out with G-rant on the phone several times trying to get him to play The Hip... He said said "you'll never hear them on this station, we only play hit music." I asked him when they played the hit music because all I ever hear is the same 5 teen-dance songs over and over...

He said that he personally likes The Hip, but until they have a #1 hit, you won't hear them. He then says "Name the last Hip album that had a #1 song on it... So I say "How about their last album World Container? In View was #1 for a little bit..."

He says, well I guarantee you won't be hearing them on this station. And I say that's fine because I can switch to 93.9 Bob FM or Live 88.5 or Chez 106 or 106.9 The Bear and hear The Hip at almost any given time of the day lol...

A few weeks later, they had a promotion on where you could pay money to have them play a song or whatever... They played The Hip several times... Needless to say I was back on the phone with G-rant that night heckling him about how their listeners were even PAYING to hear The Hip lol.


But yeah, bottom line... They will NOT play The Hip... My gf calls in quite often and they flat-out refuse to do it...

A petition MIGHT work, but I highly doubt it. I have a hard time trying to find other people around here who share my love of The Hip. Most times I see The Hip mentioned somewhere it's followed by comments from people who don't like them...

Actually, there was a thread called "Dumbest lyrics of all time" on another board I frequent and one of the first replies was "anything written by Gord Downie" Followed with replies agreeing with the comment...

There seems to be a real hate-on for the boys in this area and I can't quite understand it. Actually now that I think about it, people around here seem to be quite jealous of anyone who has had any success in their lives.

It actually seems to be that The Hip are appreciated more in The Maritimes than they are in their own province. I know anytime there is word of The Hip coming around everyone I know is snatching up tickets.

I am 18 and almost everyone I know is a fan of The Hip. Buffalo loves The Hip.

Today in gr.9 English as part of the poetry unit, I printed out the lyrics of New Orleans Is Sinking and had a different student read each verse aloud. It was such a weird feeling to listen to students read this as a text and look at 25 out of 27 students following along who had never heard the song before. They had a lot of fun trying to interpret it. Of course at first they were very proud of themselves because they thought they had it all figured out saying it was about Hurricane Katrina! 'Excellent guess' I said. There were 2 students who not only heard the song before but had seen the HIP live and were talking about it to the class and one of them pulled out an Ipod and played NOIS for the class to listen to

I won't dare say where because then some parent will write a complaint letter to the board and cc the ministry, college of teachers, board of trustees, the media, the Pope, and the school council that I allowed an iPod in class!

Haha okay. It just seemed to me that only 2 out of 27 having heard the song before would've been a pretty low number for when I was in gr. 9 (2004).
