The article stops just sort of explicitly stating that the band parted ways with Gold due to their so-called lack of American success.

Is this really why the breakup occurred? Or is that the writer's speculation?

The band has maintained for years that they stopped caring about breaking big in the U.S. a long time ago.

When was Gold sent packing?

EDIT: looks like the parting of ways occurred in mid-2003.

Maybe The Hip noticed that Jake Gold was starting to go crazy and lose his mind. Gold, of course, thought that Earl did a great job singing Little Bones the other night, which shows that his brain cells are eroding by the day. Maybe The Hip saw signs of Gold when he was in the early stages of his meltdown and jumped ship before he brought them down with him. :what

My views on Jake Gold are somewhat known; hell, I just said them again in the Canadian Idol post. However, I'll agree with Leftsetz on what he said about what Gold did for the band. From a marketing standpoint he did build them in Canada, but had a lot of help from CanCon. You can get a band opening for the Stones, Page and Plant, whomever, wherever, but if radio isn't playing the track, no one will give a damn.

The EP got solid play on college rock radio in the late 80s. That is probably the pinnacle of the band's US radio success, except for the border towns in the Northeast and Northwest. But when tastes at college radio changed, the Hip didn't. In fact, they reverted further back into their blues influences to move forward rather than shunning them in favour of the post-punk stuff they played in high school that never got them anywhere, in previous incarnations of different bands. And if you think about it, it's really not until World Container can you say, "man, these are five guys who bought and listened to Clash records in High School." Johnny told a story once about skipping an exam to buy a Police record -- you couldn't tell that on Road Apples though.

A lot of people forget that the Hip were not the only act in Gold's stable. He also did his damndest to break the Watchmen, and it would be interesting to see if they fall back in with whatever their "reunion" may become.

It's a stretch to say dropping Jake Gold can be directly correlated to declining record sales in 2004 and 2006. With their current dealings with Eggplant, they're in a group with like-minded artists, such as Kathleen Edwards and Sam Roberts. Currently Jake Gold is telling anyone who will listen that The Cliks are the greatest thing to come out of Toronto ever.

And even with their cover of Cry Me A River (yep -- that Cry Me A River), they still didn't make a dent in the US market.

Or, well, the Canadian one for that matter.

If I remember correctly, The Hip ended their relationship with Gold because of some royalty issue. If memory serves, Gold or one of his partners was not accounting for royalty payments the right way; whether this was intentional or a mistake I don't remember.

Yup, it definitely had something to do with royalties or publishing. I remember reading an article about it a while back.

When Coke Machine Glow came out, Gold was Gord's manager as a solo act. When the Hip parted ways with Gold, Gold continued as Gord's manager on a solo level during the Battle Of The Nudes era. Evidently that is no longer the case according to MAv. But then again, what's to manage anymore? Gord hasn't put out a record in 5 years.

One thing I'm curious about is how this Song Corp fiasco led to the band ditching Gold. Did Gold put the band's catalogue with Song Corp? Song Corp declared bankruptcy in the spring of 2001, and it was more than a year and a half before the band announced they were moving on from Gold. That time gap included the release of IVL and a pretty lengthy tour in support of it. Why the long wait before firing?

I'd be a more than a little surprised by this. People wrapped up in that level / type of drug use rarely are able to hold together any semblance of a career. Plus he works in the music business - if anything, I would think he'd be more into heroin or regular coke. Amy Winehouse notwithstanding, crack doesn't seem to be very prevalent in the music world.
