So the Olympics are underway...anybody watching? I caught some highlights of the opening ceremonies this morning, looked like it was pretty well done (considering what they spent to stage it it damn well better have been), but personally I don't have the attention span to watch that stuff for 4 hours. Once the actual events get going I'll probably take more of an interest, although I must admit I don't enjoy the summer games nearly as much as the winter ones.

I've been fairly impressed with the coverage so far. It has been somewhat sporadic; leaping from one sport to another. I haven't found the commercial breaks to be severely inopportune. The twelve hour time difference has definitely kept me up on a few nights. I don't generally subscribe to the majority of the event's taking place, but the Olympics are alluring enough that I'll sit down and watch men's gymnastics even when I may normally find such a display uncomfortable and useless.

I am personally not looking forward to CTV's coverage. CBC at the least has some formidable Olympic experience, and well developed sports broadcaster's working the scenes. Instead of a droopy eyed Ron MacLean providing a re-cap and a schedule, if I have to put up with a perky, cocky, and ridiculously unaware Ben Mulroney providing the same function, I can guarantee I'll only be tuning in for hockey in 2010. I'll take Mansbridge over Robertson any day, and I fear that the cast of E-Daily (CTV's only real National Entertainment programming) is going to run the show. If, however, Pierre McGuire and James Duthie unseemingly team up to provide play-by-play on the men's figure skating events, I'll tune in for pure comic relief.

I would hope that CTV would have more common sense than to make Mulroney hosting the Olympics. He's just awful. Nobody cares about Canadian Idol, he can host that crap. Leave the Olympics to real reporters.
Plus, now we'll see video highlights of events on TSN and what not, and not just stills on sports networks cause CBC owns them. The men's hockey victory over the U.S. back in 2002 should be one of the proudest moments in Canadian sports history, and yet we can never see replays cause CBC has them. We see Henderson's goal ALL the time... but Sakic's or Iginla's, never.

You can watch video highlights on Sportscentre already. In case you hadn't noticed TSN has been CBC's broadcast partner for the last few Olympics. CBC does an amazing job overall on the games and it's too bad they won't be doing Vancouver. If you don't believe me try watching NBC for a few hours. It's a hundred times worse. It'll be interesting to see what CTV does with the games. I don't think we have to worry about them having Mulroney host though, seeing as how they hired Brian Williams away from CBC for the explicit purpose of being their face of the Olympics.
