I love all of those tunes...
but
the song in that list that best represents The Hip (in my opinion) is Nautical Disaster.
So hopefully my input helped narrow it down to just one

Short answer: Nautical Disaster
Longer answer: Nautical Disaster, as determined by this forum's votes over 63 days last spring in a first-ever "tournament" of Hip songs modeled after the NCAA hoops tournament. In one-on-one matchup after one-on-one matchup, Nautical came through as a big favorite of big-time Hip fans:

(This year's winner was Grace Too, if you're looking for a second choice.)
Are you doing a studio version for the CD, or can you use a live version? Nautical live is amazing. And as a copout of sorts, you could so an older New Orleans Is Sinking live with Nautical sandwiched in the middle. Doesn't get much better than that.

Thanks, guys! I was thinking it would be Nautical, and from Live Between Us, but I wish I could put more than one... Oh well, those are the rules! I just wanted to make sure that I'm sending a great and representative song to introduce someone to the Hip!

Yeah, I was thinking about your question and I've come to the conclusion that Nautical Disaster may be the wrong song to pick.
Great song. It even won the first Hip64 best song contest, The thing is it's a bit advanced. The power of the song really takes effect upon repeated listening. I think that a newbie might miss the full range of the song the first time out.
I suggest you go with a tune that acts as a "brain worm". A song that appears simple but digs its way into the brain. The kind of song you find yourself unconsciously humming or randomly singing out loud.
I think some Hip brain worms are..

NegPhil makes some good points (including how f'in great it would be to hear Darkest One live again). Just for comparison's sake, here's the Live Between Us version of Nautical (audio only):

it depends on what your trying to do with the cd. Are you introducing someone to your fav tunes or fav bands. Is it a mood/party/rocking mix.
You may have to watch High Fidelity and then it will come to you :thumb:

Uhh if your gonna do a song from Live Between Us you should pick " Ahead by a Century " as that song kicks fuckin ass big time on that live CD.

I'd say all Live, my 02
I will not give up. My face is set,my gait is fast,my goal is heaven,my road is narrow,my way is rough,my companions are few,my guide is reliable,my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity,or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I will not give up,shut up or slow down....Blessed Be!

I'll never for get the first time I heard the opening chords for NOIS followed by Bobby's awesome riffs. I was instantly interested and it eventually led me to my first show and the rest of their catalogue.
