The Rules
#1

I was listening to 'The Rules' tonight, and it really struck me. Simple, suttle, and amazing.

Gord's voice sounds extra-raspy/cigarette-y, and I really think it adds to the song. Not that I'm condoning tobacco, and I think I read somewhere that Gord quit back in the Henhouse days.

The spanish guitar is awesome, and I really like the fade out drum-beat (similar to the idea used as the outro for The Dark Canuck), and it makes for a great transistion into Chagrin Falls.

Its not that I didn't like 'The Rules' before, but, I just think I have a new appreciation for it. Very cool tune.

I gained a whole new appreciation for 'The Rules' when I heard it at Guelph Conservation. Great song...

Nothing fake about me liking The Rules.

But then again, I like Coconut Cream, so maybe my opinion doesn't matter to some (...and I guess that rings true, Coconut Cream aside Smile ).

Well, I need a more in-depth analysis of The Rules because I don't think I get the song. I mean, "Coconut cream" is the best song they've written and my second favourite, but I just don't get The Rules.

A song shouldn't have to be explained before it speaks to you.

Edit: **I mean "you" in a general sense, not "you", as in screwy.

true, but when it's an unplucked gem, sometimes an explanation helps. I mean, I hope us Coconut Cream lovers converted a few with our interpretations or at least got some to listen to the song with a more objective state of mind.

I have listened to Coconut Cream with as many states of mind as possible and still don't care for it.

Trust me - everyone knows that!!!

I've loved The Rules since the day Phantom Power was released. I always thought it was a beautiful slow song and fit in nicely on the album. Almost like a little break. I still can't believe the hard time it gets on this board. Each their own, I suppose...

The Rules is a fine song in its own right. It just gets flak for breaking the momentum on Phantom Power.

Phantom Power was the album that got me into the Hip; I don't think it has a single flaw. I love the Rules, and at my first Hip show (Guelph Lake Island) I was really hoping they'd bust out a rarity from PP. I was so stoked when the opening riff to the Rules was played.
