What Kings, while righteous in scope, has gotten a little boring over the years...

Gord, at the end of Wheat Kings in Calgary, Oct. 28, 2006:

"I'm not talking about bankrupting a generation, I'm just talking about a little compensation. I'm not talking about any kind of transfiguration, I'm just talking about a little compensation. I'm not talking about any national contemplation, I'm just talking about a little compensation..."

And this is one of the reasons this song gets my vote.

Wheat Kings, the first time I heard it, really moved me, even now when it pops up on the iPod onmy walk into work and the sun is just peaking over the houses it's unutterably lovely.

For me that was a really easy vote.

This is the most personal match-up for me. Here we have "Wheat Kings," the song that introduced me to the Hip, vs. "Sherpa," the unplucked gem that became my all-time favorite.

The story behind "Wheat Kings" is still as powerful as ever. I still get chills sometimes from the opening loon call and lyrical imagery. However, I'm almost embarrassed to admit that my first exposure to "Wheat Kings" was a solo acoustic rendition by a stranger at a house party. Though I think that speaks a lot about the song's strength, if an amateur's half-drunken performance can entice me to further explore the real deal.

And then there's the song about a meandering friendship that, while steady, is ultimately going nowhere. I can't help but marvel at the repetitive structure, beat, and melody that parallels the course of the staling friendship. Then, unexpectedly, everything changes at the coda and both the music and relationship reach a turning point. I think “Sherpa” is Downie’s finest vocal performance and undoubtedly a masterful showcase of the band’s knack for instrumental dynamics, precise composition, and rich texture.

While the subject of Wheat Kings is one that merits lyrical tribute, the composition as a whole is pedestrian in comparison to Sherpa, imo.
