Killing time before our flight to Bologna...The start of 8 days in Italy, including Christmas in Venice...

So, anyone else ever been? Any thoughts t'share?

Should be awesome...I'm committing the perfect crime as I see it...Lady luck thinks we're headed out on a romantic getaway, while I know I'm only going for 8 days of righteous and authentic 'za...

If you get a chance check out the island of Capris. It's insanely beautiful. I don't think you're anywhere near it but it's definatley worth the trip if you make it. Don't be feeling guilty about the deliciousness that is the pizza, make sure you head to an authentic pizzaria outside of the tourist stuff because its definatley different. That said don't skip on the street vendor pizza panini's

i stayed in rome and florence while backpacking a few years ago. rome was my favourite of the trip, but florence was right up there too. so much to see and do. as well as eat. such great food in italy.

what are your plans for the 8 days? going to go north for some skiing or just relax and spoil yourselves?

enjoy your trip! im sure it will be a great time.

I did both cities while backpacking as well. I loved Florence, but I couldn't get out of Rome fast enough - probably my least favourtie place of anywhere I went in Europe. It was just too dirty and ridiculously overcrowded. I'm glad I went once to see all the historic sites, but I won't be going back if I can help it. I do agree about the food though...Italians certainly know how to eat well.

I spent many, many a night in the Czech two years ago when I was teaching in Poland. I stand by it; that's the best place in the world. Delicious, cheap beer meets rustic charm. Entirely too awesome.

Anyway, we're taking a breather after our first day in Florence. I can't tell you how good pork tastes after having spent the last three months in Istanbul.

Thanks for the well wishes, all. Venice tomorrow.

Cinque Terre on the Ligurian coast. Another place I love is Umbria (Assisi, Gubbio, Perugia...).
