I'm just wondering what the rest of you think about this..

My preference is that he be intentionally walked and then told to retire because, in my mind, he used steriods out of jealousy over the attention McGwire and Sosa were getting in their home run chase. Or Bud Selig could have an asterisk attached to the record and to the McGwire/Sosa records.

Maybe I should have made my original post clearer, I do believe that McGwire and Sosa cheated as well. I think its clear that both were using steriods or some other drugs, but none of it can be proven legally. However, I think Selig should attach an asterisk to all the above records saying that their attainment has been tainted by the use of steriods. Hank Aaron was one of the greatest ball players the game has ever seen and I feel sad knowing that his record will be broken by a selfish, churlish steriod user.

I agree. And it's not only because he's on steroids, it's because he's a major league jerk also. Aaron did it with class.

I don't think they'll ever do that because then he'll cry racism. To a certain extent, he would have a point because baseball milked the home run chase between McGwire and Sosa to the maximum extent they could, whereas Selig has been pointedly reluctant to be celebrate Bonds's chase for the all time record. The chase was good for the game, financially, but morally at the first hint of evidence of steriod use the league should have suspended McGwire and Sosa.

I don't think it was widely known or speculated publicly that McGuire used roids until after he retired. When he was setting the record, baseball was still turning the blind eye to it all. Once it got leaked to the public Bud Selig finally half admitted there was a problem. But I agree that there should be an asterisk to McGuire's record and to Bonds' once he finally hits 2 more home runs. If I was pitching to him, I'd walk him every time.

It was pretty widely accepted that he was on something, particularly after a reporter discovered androstenedione in his locker and he admitted to using it.

Androstenedione is not the same as steroids, and considering the fact that they were legal at the time McGwire used them I don't think it's as bad as taking steroids. Andro is banned now, and I don't doubt that McGwire probably did use steroids at some point, my point is that at least from what I can remember, it wasn't publicly speculated that he did use steroids until after he retired.

i think bonds is not a like able person/player to begin with (refusing home run derby etc.) but he is taking more than his share of abuse for the the steroids that mcgwire, sosa, canseco, palmeiro and whoever else used...and under the rules of baseball when they were playing none of these guys (including bonds) did anything against the rules...MLB as an organization and selig (and his predecessors) is to blame for this problem, they allowed the steroids to be used and instead of implementing a drug policy they let it slide and now bonds is taking all the criticism(some of which is earned, not all)...and the whole debate of whether selig should be in attendance is absurd, thats his job and if he doesnt want to associate himself or recognize the record he should have a stop to the steroids 15 years ago...bonds was a hall of fame player long before all the steroid issues came up and is one of the, if not the, greatest baseball player ever...numerous mvps, golden gloves, silver sluggers, 40-40 guy, home run titles, batting titles...and I dont believe bonds was jealous of mcgwire or sosa because neither of these guys were even close to the talent level of bonds...and everyone can talk about how much they dislike bonds, boo him, have signs at the park for him but in san diego last night that place went absolutely crazy when he tied the record...this turned into a bit of rant but my point is that it is fine to dislike bonds (hes an ass, i dont like him) but it is a shame the disrespect as a baseball great and of his accomplishment, he is being shown
