you get to bring a Hip mix CD containing 13 songs to a desert island but here's the snag, the tracklisting of your CD must be chosen from the corresponding tracklistings of the 11 Hip albums (counting the EP).

for example, your track 1 must be chosen from the pool of track 1's on the albums (i.e. make a choice between courage, grace too, poets, etc... as your track 1, do this for 1-13)

Since only three albums go to a track 13 and two of those go to a track 14, these tracks have been combined to form a single pool for track 13 along with The New Maybe (since it is the closer on Yer Favs) Along those same lines, No Threat was added to the pool for track 1 since it opens Yer Favs.

Make it a best-of, a worst-of if you like , a personal favs, its all good, the idea is just for fun and to put together a tracklisting based on unnecessarily restrictive guidelines :thumb:

I actually had almost exactly (except not with The Hip) this same thing in my thesis project and presented a paper on it - dealing with digital "remix" - at a conference in Australia earlier this year! I tried the idea a few years back with a couple of my favorite bands (Swell and Six by Seven) and eventually mixed some podcasts from the process of recombining "pieces" of digital culture. From a blog entry about it...

The arrangement of these pieces initially started out as an iTunes playlist where I grouped all the songs from Six by Seven on my computer by track #. From here I used a specific “design constraint”, i.e the first song had to be a first song on one of the albums, the second song had to be a second song on one of the albums, and so on. Now we have pieces and a rough mix. The pieces are the songs, the playlist is the mix.

I was going to do this with Hip songs at some point but hadn't gotten around to it yet, maybe because I couldn't decide between "Grace, too" and "Blow at High Dough" as the first song in the mix. Tough call.

Anyhow, I'll for sure be interested in seeing what people come up with
