There is just no use place for handguns in our society today. Target and contest pistol shooting are the only quasi-legitimate reasons for them to be around. But even having that as a sport/hobby makes the access of these guns so much easier.

Aside from Police, Military and appropriate Security people, handguns should be made illegal...and this is coming from an avid hunter.

When is the last time you saw or heard of a drive by shooting with a .308 Winchester or a .270 Remington.

The majority of firearms homicides in Canada are committed with long guns.

Given the location, this shooting was likely gang-related. The weapon used in this case was almost certainly unregistered, and probably was illegally imported into Canada.

I'm not going to make a pro-gun argument. The simple fact is that further regulating handguns is unlikely to make much difference to gang crime, given our porous border with the US and the much laxer regulations there.

The problem is gangs, and gang violence fueled by the drug trade. There aren't any simple solutions.

You shouldn't accept so many assumptions, especially concerning this case (at least based upon the info available in the CBC link). So forget about the simple solutions, you and I still have to buy the simple explanations being shoved down our throat. You've got more opinion than fact in this thread already.

If opinions on gun laws is what you consider constructive, I've got some very well cultivated opinions on Catholicism that I could share with you.

I agree with Opiated 100%. I work at a school near where this incident took place, in a behaviour class with some pretty messed up kids, but the parents are another story altogether.

I'm scared, folks. I really am. My daughter is almost three, a mere two years away from going to school. I'm sending her into this country's school system, expecting her to learn everything that a child deserves to learn in a free country. I do NOT want to send her to school every day knowing that at any minute during the school day, some lunatic could possibly take my baby girl away from me. Home schooling never looked so damn good. Blame it on the parents? Yes, I 100% agree with that statement. A child's environment has some to do with their upbringing, however, but I believe that solid parenting can overcome any type of environment. I know many of you will disagree with me, but I'm a daddy... a damn good daddy, and if someone's kid takes mine away from me............................................................

Can you find some documentation for this Skip...I'm not calling you a liar or anything but I've never heard of gangs killing with hunting rifles.

I remember the deaths of those RCMP officers on the drug farm in the Prairies a few years ago were committed with hunting rifles but those types of murders are far less prevalent than your typical metropolitan gang-style violence.

I think we can both agree that handguns pose the more serious threat to society as a whole in reference to gun violence.
