As somewhat of a Hip newbie, I'd like to know if anyone is aware of any books that have been written about the band (I'm pretty sure the answer is "no," since I have not been able to find anything after a fairly exhaustive search).
For a band that has been together for nearly a quarter century and are a national institution in their homeland, I'm really surprised that someone hasn't at least approached the Hip about writing a book. I'd think they'd be a perfect candidate for a large format (i.e. coffee table sized), fully illustrated biography similar to the U2 book that was published in September 2006 ("U2 by U2"). Now, I do realized that the Hip's fame and popularity is nowhere near that of U2 (then again, U2 is arguably the most famous band in the world), but I'd think that a book like this would be a huge seller in Canada (and would probably sell reasonably well in U.S. markets like Michigan and New York state).
Since I first started listening to the Hip, and became increasingly obsessed with their music, I've read everything I've been able to get my hands on. I've been pretty frustrated with the lack of substantial articles and writings about the band (certainly in the U.S.). I'd love to read about how the guys met, how they formed the band, and stories about their early days on the road. (I'm sure they must have some really fascinating "Spinal Tap-ish" tales to tell). Plus, I'd love to know more about how their creative process has evolved in the time they've been together (i.e. songwriting and recording).
