Any Hawksley Workman fans?
#1

He's playing on PEI for two consecutive nights in April. I was thinking of going but $32.50 seems a bit steep to see him. Call me cheap, but I think I'll save my money. I saw him once before and it was a good show, but whatever. Anyway, is anyone watching any of his current tour shows?

I'm a big Hawksley fan, but I like his older stuff a lot better than his newer material. I haven't went to any of the shows on this tour. I don't mind some of his newer songs, but like I said, it just isn't as good as the Stuff pre Between the Beautifuls. For Him and the Girls, Lover/Fighter, Last Night We Were (The Delicious Wolves) and Treeful of Starling were all great albums.

Keep meaning to pick up some of his stuff, every time I hear one of his songs on the CBC they blow me away. He's one of those people (from what I've heard) who has a very distinct sound but none of the songs sound the same, if you follow me.

I've actually seen him twice on this tour, and although I agree his new music isn't really worth listening to (with the exception of "We'll Make Time" which rocks) his band still puts on an epic show and it's probably worth the money to see a show this tour. Hawksley is such a fantastic entertainer, I don't think I could ever pass up a show of his.

I saw him when he came through Chicago in... October, I think? So I don't know if that's this tour or some other tour; I think he only did five or six US dates. I'm told he puts on a good show when he's got a full backing band, but when I saw him, it was just him and Mr Lonely and 50 displaced CanRock fans in a bar. Hawksley seemed to spend most of his time recording and playing back drum beats on the laptop and then experimenting with feedback and distortion. Every once in a while, the experiments were successful, and sometimes I heard something I recognized as one of his songs (or one of the Hip's songs; he sang the first few lines of Blow at High Dough), but mostly, it was loud -- the kind of loud you feel rather than hear, because you can't actually hear anything -- and harsh and gave me a headache. I'll probably go see him again, but only when he's got a band with him, and it's going to take me a while to work back up to it.

It's funny you say that, because that's the only new song of his I really like too. I was disappointed to see it wasn't on Meat, I think you can only buy it on his digital album available only on I-tunes.

You probably caught him on the Los Manlicious tour which came out before his latest album. What you are describing sounds like that album, a lot of techno-y distorted noise. I think it's his worst album by far. I had a chance to see a show on that tour, and after watching a few clips on Youtube from it, i decided against it.

I saw him play with just Lonely once, but it was on the Treeful of Starling tour, so it was still really good.

Yeah, I saw him a few years back, here on PEI, and it wasn't a full band. He played in the smaller area of the university bar. I was hoping for a full band but it was only him and one other guy from what I can remember. I remember kind of looking forward to him playing the guitar but he seemed to play drums quite a bit and the other fella played guitar. It was a good show, VERY LOUD, but not quite what I expected. His voice seemed quite powerful, but it was a tiny bar so maybe that had a lot to do with the high volume of the show. If he's got a full band with him, maybe I'll go see him next week.

Yeah, the Hawksley+Mr Lonely 'Treeful of Starlings' tour was great, but my favourite recent tour is far and away the full band 'Between the Beatifuls' tour (with costumes and everything!).

I really regret missing that tour, I had tickets to one of the Toronto shows, but it was on the night of a massive snow storm and I opted to stay home. I remember seeing a youtube clip of him doing Canadian Motorcycle Gangs at one of those shows, which might be my favourite Hawksley song of all time.

I saw his April 8th show in Fredericton at the Playhouse. There was 100 people there at the max, but Hawksley and the band still treated those in attendance to a memorable show. Here's the setlist to the best of my ability.

01. Safe & Sound (Snippet) / Maniacs - For Him And The Girls
02. (The Happiest Day I Know) Is A Tokyo Bicylce - Meat
03. Common Cold - Almost A Full Moon
04. Piano Blink - Between The Beautifuls / Los Manlicious
05. Your Beauty Must Be Rubbing Off - (Last Night We Were) The Delicious Wolves
06. Baby Mosquito - Meat
07. The Future Language Of Slaves - Lover/Fighter
08. Depress My Hangover Sunday - Meat
09. Zubodyssey - ?
10. Some People - Milk
11. We Dance To Yesterday - ?
12. Who Do They Kiss - Milk
13. Girls On Crutches - Los Manlicious
14. Snow Angel - Milk
15. Suicidekick - Milk
16. Dirty And True - (Last Night We Were) The Delicious Wolves
17. Lethal And Young - (Last Night We Were) The Delicious Wolves

18. Song For Sarah Jane - Meat
19. We'll Make Time (Even If There Ain't Time) - Meat
20. Smoke Baby - Lover/Fighter

$32? Go for sure. I saw him last week and it was great. Even though his most recent albums have a higher production value than his early stuff, once you strip away all the effects and electronics they are still good songs written on the guitar and piano. This tour he is playing with a band, and the songs are stripped down and are great rock songs. He is a great and unique performer. Go check it out.
