Anyone else going to this show? I have an extra ticket if anyone who can make it in to Kingston or is in the area wants to go.

Something kind of special about seeing Gord in his (and my) hometown. The last thing I saw at the Grand Theatre was a play as part of a Grade 10 english class. KCVI, the oldest secondary school in Ontario, dontcha know?

In from Kingston. What a night.

Highlight of the evening is Steeplechase. Somehow the song is the ultimate combination of Gord's live art via the overhead projector, the brilliant clusterfuck that is the Country of Miracles and some pretty incredible audience participation at the end, once they realized what to do. To quote one of the two guys who wanted to stand near the front for most of the show, "wow!"

Trick Rider was dedicated to GD's parents, who were sitting the row behind us and over on the aisle. When Gord said he never got to thank them, there was a silence and then, from that crowd: "well, why don't you thank them?" Gord's response: "blow me." Perhaps you think this may be a little harsh, until you realize the "heckler" was Gord Sinclair, also in the the row behind us on the other end of our mid section.

The walk through the crowd after Yer Possessed was rad. My buddy has a new Facebook profile pic, the rare double photo-bomb where he tried to ruin a picture of Gord, and Gord therefore tried to ruin the picture of him, creating a beautiful, albeit blurry, photo of the night.

Also interested was how 11th Fret and Chancellor were played. 11th Fret was introduced as "the saddest song we know," and played with 1/100th of the force it commands on the record, really relying on Dale Morningstar's guitar work. Chancellor on the other hand sounds more like a Hip song than anything else, sped up to a radio single rocker, losing nearly all of what made it so beautiful in the first place. That said, it's still well written, the band still plays the hell out of it and overall it comes off well - just remarkably different.

Great night at the Grand. Last time I was there was to see Equus in 2003 - this was significantly better on all counts.

Cheers,

Pat

I'm sitting on a very early train back to Toronto. This was a dumb idea (the early train), but for last night's show, totally worth today's pain.

When I got to the Grand and saw Gord S. in the lobby I knew this was going to be a good night. And it was.

My seat in the balcony was great. Too far away to take pictures (didn't matter anyway, MAv was there), but amazing to witness the entire scene. Chris Koster was in my row.

My first thought was how quiet the show was (the crowd I mean). It was really like attending a theatre event. Nobody stood, and everyone clapped politely. Gord didn't even need a mic to banter with the crowd. It was really like a family event. In the first set, Gord got a little boy sitting in the front row to sit on stage and make sure the lightshade was turning.

Steeplechase blew me away. I got a second chance at it after the Montreal debacle that ruined the whole song. Trick Rider (for his parents) was realy nice. I also really lked the slowed down version of 11th Fret. And personally, I love Chancellor (the faster version). Oh yeah, and the theremin! Was it ever strong last night! Awesome acoustics in that place.

I thought 11th fret was one of the highlights of the show, which is odd, since I don't usually like that song all that much. Other songs I really enjoyed more than usual: 'moon over glenora' and 'broadcast'. But the highlight overall was the band coming back onstage the same way they had marched off, with Dave (?) playing the 'doodado dooo do' riff on the french horn (tuba?). Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaantastic.

Miles better than the bluesfest show in ottawa earlier this year.

My tape tells me this is the correct running order:

Set 1
Starpainters
The dance and its disappearance
Moon over Glenora
Yellow days
The hard Canadian
Night is forgetting
11th Fret
Canada geese

Set 2
The east wind (acoustic)
Vancouver divorce
Christmastime in Toronto
Gone
Trick rider
the drowning machine
Steeplechase
Figment
Yer possessed
---
Ventilator blues
Broadcast
Chancellor
Insomniacs of the world, good night

"Go smoke a joint",, haha first time i heard gord say that to end a set. wooooww. Steeplechase will never fail to blow me away. powerhouse tune -- live it takes on a perpetual life; as do most of the songs. Vancouver divorce was a jam session at its finest, along with canada geese, drowing machine, figment n all the rest. 11th fret was lethal. Broadcast was super extended. Ventilator was awesomee, fucking love that track,, You gonna fight it? the setlist said 'when we dance' as the encore... but ventilator seemed muchh more fitttinng!Amazing all and all..
There wasn't much canadiana in the air, espicially after gord was professing for the environment. GO GREEN (face with gunspointed)! -- i think the seats were just too comfortable and the theater "respectable?' aspect is tough to overcome.
Mad love for the country. One more to go in toronto . daguumnn

Absolutely incredible show. This was my first time seeing Gord solo and it met and exceeded my expectations. The projector backdrops are really cool. Highlight for me was probably Vancouver Divorce, Christmas Time in Toronto, Moon Over Glenora and Gord's Rob Ford impression.

Between songs, GD is quietly and carefully adjusting the dose of red required to achieve the desired effect on his overhead collage. A woman's voice in the audience:
"Would you believe that I love you the most?"
GD: "I have no reason not to."

Eventually, yeah. I might be able to post the mp3s in the next few days, but the full .wavs might take a while, simply because I don't quite know what to do with them.

I'm not sure if the link is still valid, but here's ventilator blues. Note the taper's editorial "niiiiiiice" about 10 seconds in.

ETA: crap, the link has expired. Will try again later.

No problem.

Compress the WAV to FLAC and upload it to my FTP server. I'll take care of the rest for you if you want. Send me a PM if you are interested and I'll send you the details.
