Downie Tour Dates

sherpahigh Wrote:My wife got a call yesterday about the show here in Calgary next month. Apparently the show has been moved to Mac Hall Ballroom?! Boo! I had some good seats too.

I assume this is because of the lack of demand. :x

Yup, I had front row seats. Very disheartening to go from that to general admission without any sort of compensation.

This is a TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) event.

As if we weren’t going to be distracted enough by the dozens of screenings and parties, a killer lineup of Canadian indie acts to accompany the festival’s film events has been announced. Clubland’s Roosevelt Room will be transformed into the Festival Music House, a spot where Hollywood execs can scope out Canadian talent, starting September 13.

Montreal rockers Stars headline the opening-night show, followed by City and Colour on September 14 and Tragically Hip front man Gord Downie on September 15. Other notable acts that will be performing include Chilly Gonzales, Basia Bulat, Tokyo Police Club, Hawksley Workman and Zeus. Like almost all of the fun stuff at TIFF, the concerts are by invitation only, but Workman’s cameo in Score: A Hockey Musical is for all to see.

I feel your pain. I had 5th row centre and I was really looking forward to seeing him in a theatre setting. I just got home from vacation and I had the same message on my phone. And yea, I'm guessing it's because of the lack of demand. That must be somewhat disheartening for Gord.

That's my birthday. Too bad it's invitation only.

Anyone have a Vancouver review/setlist?

Tried to take a setlist, but it got a little difficult. Alexander Keiths has a way of distracting me.

In all seriousness, it was a long, and immensely enjoyable show. Two sets and a short encore. Julie Doiron wore a cast on her leg and Gord took a few playful digs at her throughout the night. Something about falling in a hole after 12 beers. Gord seemed in great spirits (Besides Utrecht '06, has he ever not?) and the night turned into a bit of a comedy revue at times. It's amazing watching this band in action; they have so much freaking fun onstage, and they cull fans into that zone. The lame-ass wankers in the crowd sat for the first set, but everyone crowded the front at the beginning of the second set. The interaction between the band, and the band and the crowd was plentiful. Some shit for brains in the crowd shouted out during Gord's introduction of the band that "We're only here to see you, Gord!" which brought a steady chorus of boos from the crowd. Nice to see Vancouver finally showing some emotion and sticking up for the Country of Miracles. Hearing Gord go on about the Canada you "Feel" instead of the Canada you "Know" also brought the house down. Goddamned Gord, hitting up the patriot in all of us.

A varied set, with tunes from all three records. Chancellor, 11th Fret and Yellow Days all stood out. The night really exposed Gord as an artist. Lots of visuals, including a projector which Gord had a lot of fun with. Spontaneous drawing, creating an ocean, etc. Lots of movement too. Much like The Hip, it was tough to keep your eyes in one place.

Gord's got himself a nice beard too. They covered a Stones track, the kind of track that everyone's heard but forgets the title. Dang.

Musically, the band wasn't exactly on point all night, but the opening night of the tour will do that. But what fun. I'm still reeling today. It was as great a "Performance" as I've seen in a long time.

No word from the Mission and Vernon concerts!?
Hopefully some people are attending the Edmonton concert tonight so we can get more updates as the tour progresses.

An incomplete/un-ordered first setlist for vernon:
Starpainters (Opener)
Vancouver Divorce
Chancellor
Canada Geese
Moon over Glenora
The Dance and its Disappearance

There were three or four spontaneous jams, "Toronto Girl" being about Julie. Another with Dave ranting about dog poo on a walking trail if I recall correctly. For another, Gord brought a fan from the first row onstage who was holding a sign, "I want to sing with Gordon Downie." He did a call-and-response thing with him for a couple minutes while the band jammed and chanted, "I want to sing with Gordon Downie."

There was another song between Ventilator Blues and Insomniacs but I can't seem to remember now. I loved the slower, more absorbing rendition of 11th fret, as well as the completely solo-acoustic East Wind. Steeplechase was incredibly powerful.

If this wasn't the most entertaining show I've ever been to, its definitely top 5 for me.

Edit: I just recalled, the missing song from the encore was "Memo to My Son."

Ventilator Blues has always been one of my favourite Stones songs. Rumour has it they've never played it live, so The Country of Miracles looks likes its my best bet to ever see it!

Ventilator Blues was covered in Vancouver too. Could be a tour-wide cover.
