Accoring to the slobberbone FB page. this guy produced the hips best stuff:
... We lost a great one today. Don Smith, producer/engineer is responsible for shaping the sound of some of the greatest music ever made. The Stones/Keith Richards, Cracker, Tragically Hip, Travelling Wilburys, Tom Petty, The Neville Brothers. Too many to list. So put on Talk Is Cheap, Gentleman's Blues, Road Apples, Slippage by Slobberbone, pour a drink, turn it up and raise your glass to Don Smith. He will be missed.

Couldn't believe it when I heard it. If I ever got to record my own stuff with a producer, Don and Daniel Lanois, would the two people I would have wanted to work with most in the entire world. Complete opposites sound wise, but each masters at getting their respective "organic" sounds.

UTH & RA are easily the best sounding Hip albums IMO. I was listening Keith Richards Main Offender album recently and loved the real, live sound, so I checked the credits...you guessed it...recorded by Don Smith. One can only imagine how much better FC could have been if Don had been asked to stick around for one more album. Here's a quote from Keith Richards, about Don Smith.
"I'd very much like to use (for the Stones next year) the same cat who engineered this album, Don Smith... I recorded this album the same way I do Stones albums, the whole band playing in one room. Don Smith is a master at that. Even if he didn't do this record, if I had heard his work with some other band, I'd want him to do the Stones because I think he's the best guy for the job".

During the intro to The Dire Wolf at the 6/10/2009 Troubadour, Los Angeles, CA show, Downie dedicated the song to the ailing Don Smith.
That song is todays SOTD.
