Howdy all,
I'm a history nut and my fiancee asked me for a list of history books I want for my birthday/Christmas. I'm being kinda lazy at the moment :lol: and thought I'd ask around for good Canadian history books, specifically Confederation/WWI/WW2/politics books. I've read Romeo Dallaire's memoir, which was very fascinating so something along those lines would be intriquing. Any takers? Thanks!

How about a great history book about Canadian music? Probably not really what you want, but it is a great read.

Go search out Pierre Burton, his books are fantastic, I think you'll find exactly what you're looking for.

If you liked Dallaire's memoir, you might be interested in Empty Casing by Fred Doucette, a memoir of his time in Sarajevo as a UN observer, and his struggle with PTSD afterwards. It is excellent, though not strictly "history."
Also, there's Lewis Mackenzie's Peacekeeper, on his military career and time in command of UNPROFOR, and of course, Hillier's memoir, which I think will be well worth reading.
Granatstein published high-level histories of Canada's participation in WWI and II, Marching to Armageddon and A Nation Forged in Fire. I'm not sure if these are still in print. You'd like Granatstein in general, I think.
Oh, and you should read the new edition of Gwynne Dyer's War, even though you'll likely disagree with him on just about everything.
