Song Selection
#1

2 Part Thread

OK....now that we are well into the tour, I was wondering what songs haven't we seen yet that you think might show up. Please refrain from pipe dreams on this thread. I'm wondering what songs do you think might show up, based on previous tours or songs that you know may have been reheresed.

For me, as many of you may know, it is Cordelia!! I also expect to see Fire In The Hole based on how often it was played last tour. Same with 38 Years Old.

Part 2: Certain songs that were played often on recent tours have seemingly vanished. Part of me thinks that maybe the band wants to rotate out songs for tours so they don't get stale, but another part of me thinks maybe the band just doesn't enjoy playing certain songs as much. Certain "popular songs" that I've never quite understood why they aren't played include:

The Luxury
So Hard Done By
700 Ft
Freak Turbulance
Silver Jet
Vaccination Scar
The Wherewithal

Any theories on these, or other songs you think fit in this cattegory?

I'm assuming you are putting that in the first half with songs you think they will play, since it has gotten pretty consistent plays in past tours. I'm kind of surprised it's only been played once or twice this tour, given the acoustic potential.

Erm...The Darkest One wasn't played all that often on the IVL tour! Has it even been played since - maybe a couple times?

Btw, where's the live song database? I forget...

If I remember correctly, the Darkest One and Dark Canuck got a few plays early on during the IVL tour but then vanished until Dark Canuck was brought back this year.

I don't think many fans mind that Silver Jet and Vaccination Scar have been packed away.

My theory on 38 YO, LTR, these are CLASSIC Hip songs, and I think by not playing them this tour it will really make it special when they break them out in a couple years for the next album tour. 38 YO wasn't played for 12 yrs until Fort York, then was played maybe 10 or so times during the rest of the tour. I think by only playing them on rare occasions it keeps them in that elite/special status. When we do hear them live we go OMG OMG and grab your buddy in amazement...like I did when I heard Cordelia at Kee to Bala!

Still very surprised that Fire in the Hole hasn't been played once - My fav song to close out the set with. Maybe it is another they want to have us yearn to hear in later days.

Where the Hip don't even go

also I'm surprised that Sharks, WIld Mountain Honey and The Completists don't ever get played also - they are all awesome songs - OK The Completists did get played once on this tour so far but that is not exactly going to sate one's desire.
What about Vapour Trails as well
and no Sherpa...

I know that most people on the board don't love Jet and Vaccination scar, but I just think it is a bit surprising since they were each released as singles. Maybe the band doesn't love them either. I always wrote off Vaccination Scar to them not using a slide at all last tour, but that shouldn't be an issue any more.

I LOVE the completist, and wish it got another turn. Sometimes I wonder if they boys don't love the way the song sounds, so they don't bring them back. I think that may have happened with Stay after the Danforth show. I loved hearing it, but I was a bit nervous at some points thinking Gord was going to miss a line or the band would be off. I think the same thing may have happened to Fly and Luv(sic) on the last tour, since they didn't get as many plays as the other tunes.

In looking at the stats and adding songs to it after every show it seems that this tour is quite different from the premis of the Evening With tour in 2000. This one seems to have a significant number of songs played most of the time (WATS songs plus standards such as Poets, NOIS, Blow, M@W, Fireworks, In View, Giftshop, Grace II, ABAC, Nautical, BobC etc) a bunch of fairly commonly songs rotated in and out - such as Little Bones, 100Meridian, FC, Locked, Escape, Good Life etc. and then a bunch of rarities that seem to be getting very little airing - Titanic Terrarium, Thugs, Yawning, Emperor Penguin, Josephine, Dark Canuck, Dire Wolf, Are We Family, If New Orleans Is Beat, M@W songs apart from M@W or Tiger The Lion.... etc...

Overall it seems far more standard than what I had preconcieved as what the tour would be based on the last Evening With...Tour. Not that the shows aren't great but it seems to have a far less varied feel than that tour. Maybe I'm just looking at the numbers too much.

I wonder if someone did the same song stat count for the 2000 tour if we would see the same thing?

Yeah good point - It would be interesting to see - maybe if I have some free time I'll look at how that tour played out - granted we are now 4 albums past that tour and in hindsight everything looks better since it all seems classic now...

Good point. Every time I see an old setlist I say "Man....that looks amazing!" But then you always have to remember to put it into context with the date. I look at some of my first shows from the M@W tour, and say man, I'd kill to see that show now. But at the time, they didn't seem anything special.

That said: I would love to see if someone could look at the last Evening With tour and see how it looks. All I know is that I saw Everytime You Go and The Luxury....

I can take a look but I'll have to print off all the shows from the tour and enter them into the spreadsheet I've created to see the numbers - could take a few days or so but I don't mind unless someone else wants to do it.
