So I was at work today--luckily I have a job that offers me the opportunity to listen to music on my headphones while I do my job at my desk--and put DFN in my CD Walkman (yes, I know that sounds hopelessly ancient--I assure you that I do also have an MP3 player on my cell phone). First of all, what a great album start to finish--probably, push come to shove, my favorite Hip album. Does Gord Sinclair's bass playing get any better than it it on that album? Gord Downie's lyrics are fantastic, so many quotable lines.
Anyway, I can't say I get the "shivers down my spine" reaction to too many songs by anyone, but without fail, anytime I hear "Nautical Disaster," it just does the trick EVERY SINGLE TIME I EVER LISTEN TO IT. What a phenomenal combination of great lyrics and storytelling, poignancy, and a musical performance that perfectly fits the song. The sound of the guitars alone take you to that "rocky socket on the coast of France."

For me, this is THE pinnacle hip album, and song. I wrote a paper once on the hip, and wrote about how this song basically sums up everything that makes the band great. I love how the lyrics are a stream-of-conscience storytelling; it's amazingly well written, and the music captures the essence of the lyrics perfectly. My favourite moment in any hip song is when Gord sings "And we headed for home..." and the the guitar solo breaks out shortly after. Pure ecstasy for me.

I concur 100%. I was actually considering a new thread essentially - what is the pinnacle Hip song. To me it is Nautical, hands down.
A Hip set list is like a box of chocolates..you never know which one you're going to get.

It's one of those songs you just need to scream along with every once in a while... Definitely one of Gord's best vocal performances.
