We Are The Same Discussion

Seriously? I figured Furrows would be the one song that everybody here could agree on. That tune just kicks so much ass, especially when the drums kick in during the 2nd verse and Robby lets loose with that rippin' solo. Right now it's my second favorite on the album behind The Last Recluse.

Furrows is great, agreed. The Last Recluse, though... :what Big Grin

I agree, those are my 2 favourite songs from the album, along with Speed River

I think the lyrics and material is great, but very overproduced. It strays away from the original producing that the hip used to have in the previous albums. What ever happened to producing their songs raw and honestly instead of adding layers upon layers of musical instruments which ARENT played by any of the band members. I dont know about you guys, but I appreciate the Hip because they are professional. It takes much more courage to produce a simple album where you can actually HEAR the instruments they are playing. Im not saying that WATS is terrible. On the contrary, the material and lyrics are well written, but i seriously think its time for a new producer. Definatly wasnt impressed with WC, and it seems as though Bob Rock is just a wrong match for the Hip. He's trying to steer them toward something I dont recognize as "Hip Originality". A simple, concisely produced album like IVL or PP gives a more personal sound in my opinion, and really shows how good a band really is. If i wanted to hear a bunch of background layers to the Hip's songs, i would listen to a Linkin Park album or something. Bob Rock's time is up.

I hate Bob Rock as much as the next guy, but I think this works. You might think it's "braver" to record five guys in a basement with no overdubs, but why shouldn't they use everything at their disposal to accentuate the music? As long as it's "serving the song", I don't have a problem with it.

The strings and background vocals dont serve the music, that's the problem. There are some good songs there, very good songs. But they are buried so deep under all of those layers of complete garbage that what makes them good is lost. SOme of these songs sound like freakin show tunes. So sad. I'd love to see what these would sound like if a real producer ripped out all of that. Probably what you'll hear live. This band is best when you hear it live. I would much rather hear something similiar to that on the record.

That's exactly what I thought this morning; that they sound like showtunes.

Agree 100%. This is and always has been a LIVE BAND. That's what they are known for being even by people around the world who don't really know their music. Any producer in their right mind would see that clearly the objective should be to capture the live sound, the live power.

I just don't get why Bob Rock doesn't clue in. Every album he does for every band just gets more and more produced each time. It's like listening to music that was created in a sterile laboratory.

What worse, I just can't understand why the bands keep coming to him. Sure he broke Metallica's biggest record, but that wasn't overpolished, it was completely raw, and who are we kidding? Metallica was going to be massive no matter what. OLP, TTH, etc, etc... He just doesn't break it big for them. They were fine the way they were, leave them be please.

I assume you're talking about the Black Album. You think "Nothing Else Matters" is 'completely raw', but We Are The Same sounds like it was made in a 'sterile lab'?

Yes. I'm not saying that it wasn't edited or anything, and yes for Metallica NEM is softer, but there's not a shitload of layering and polishing. The guitars sound real, and the drums have proper sound. I know there's a symphony track behind NEM but that was a project they wanted to do with Michael Kamen and not a true reflection of the whole album. It's not perfect, it's still Bob Rock garbage, but for Bob Rock, they still get the songs rough and aggressive, with lots of raw riffing. Much shorter, simpler songs than their earlier stuff, but not the crap production on something like 'We Are The Same'

This new album seems to have hit a nerve with everyone.... both ends of the spectrum.

Yes, it is really produced. yes, there is days when I will long for the Blues/Bar Rock of UTH and RA but where I am in my life right now in 2009...this album hits it just right... The first segment of Depression Suite is magical. Lot's of good points here being made about it. I think the guys really are sticking their necks out on this one.... And remember, I am sure the band would have final say about all that instrumentation :thumb: Not Bobby Rock.... he just suggests idea's and records them...... :rambo:

Beat me to it. I'm not sure that the majority of people on here would be complaining about Bob Rock's percieved influence if a couple of "well known" frequent posters hadn't remarked on it. It seems to me that alot of people are trying to speak about "production values" and "polishing" as though they know what they're talking about when most of the time I get the feeling that they know as much about the details of producing a record as I do about the details of quantum physics, not very much. (not everybody)

I concur wholeheartedly! WATS is The Hip all grown up - the boys are in their 40s remember. For me, in my late 30s, this album is a masterpiece!

Carry on.

Yea, like it or not the Hip's demographic is changing or is kind of an unknown to them....so why not make the album that THEY want to make...... Personally I like the Hip because each album is a different monster..... 5 years from now, I will still have moods that I want to hear Morning Moon and days I want Fire in the Hole....Hope that makes a little sense...lol :thumb:

That's the beauty of the hip, they cover a vast array of musical terrain so to speak.
