The CBC's running this thing where they will compile 49 "definitive" Canadian songs and attempt to get Barack Obama to listen to them.

There's no guarentee that he's going to actually listen to or like them, but I thought it might be worth a push to get a Hip song on that list. Few could dispute that they fit the bill of "definitively Canadian" music.

My first thought for which song to push is Fireworks, and I'm trying to compose a case to put to the people running the contest, but what do the rest of you guys think?

Well, let's kind of think what song we might use to attempt to hook someone on the Hip. And the Canadiana should be relatively obvious.

There are a ton of great Hip songs to choose from, but it would be an absolute crime if the Rheostatics "Northern Wish" is not included on such a playlist.

Yeah, The Hip obviously need to be on there so do the Rheostatics, I think. They're still a really important part of Canadian music even though no one outside the borders aside from those with a huge interest in Canada and Canadian music (usually Hip fans too). I'd also add Eric's Trip in there but... I dunno. They're amazing but I don't know if they're something that would get him into Canadian music.

Well, the list is out, and two Hip songs made the list, Wheat Kings and Bobcaygeon.

I'm really surprised that those are the only Hip songs that made the list. I'm also surprised that only one Sam Roberts song made the list but that's another story.

^ Not only that, but if you're only going to have one Sam Roberts song, that's about the worst choice possible. I love Sammy and all but god I can't stand that song...

Nice to see The Weakerthans get on the list for One Great City! though.
