Johnny Cash American V
#1

Didn't see anything in a search, but the final Johnny Cash American album will be released on July 4. Well, for those who feel like searching, it's out on the net, and boy... if any one (including Lightfoot) has done a better version of "If You Could Read My Mind", I'd like to hear it.

"Like the 309" the last song Johnny ever wrote, is included here too. A classic country song that few other people could pull off.

The "Four Strong Winds" cover is pretty sweet too.

Cheers,

Pat

I'm also looking forward to the Bruce Springsteen cover, "Further On Up the Road". I love that song, and it'll be really interesting to hear what Cash did with it. I'll definitley be buying this disc on July 4th.

Johnny Cash's music is GREAT but I wish more attention was paid to his originals. I don't agree with people who say Cash does the best versions of songs that he covers. He didn't create the song. How can ya say Cash does a better version of LIGHTFOOT'S ART CREATION? Half the people that listen to Johnny don't even know the songs are covers. Confusedcratch: I get a kick out of hearing how GREAT "Rusty Cage" is and how Johnny is the greatest, without giving any credit to the originators of the song, Soundgarden.

hotmetal, take no offense to my thoughts. I love Johnny as much as the next guy and know he does GREAT COVERS. I guess I'm just a little amused that the bands he covers don't seem to get any credit when they were the ones who wrote and composed the songs. That, and the fact that I refuse to say a cover is better than the original. For instance, I love "Hurt" but I'll always give more credit to NIN because they created the song. If they didn't make the song, there would be no song for Johnny to cover.

Goddess Fiona even sings with Johnny on a cover of a Cat Stevens song. It's great, but it's not better than Cat's version.
ps. Johnny Cash rules. :thumb: Big Grin

Agreed! I absolutely love his covers, but his originals are freakin' incredible. "Hurt" obviously got the most attention from American IV, but my favorite songs on that disc are two Cash originals, "The Man Comes Around" and "Tear Stained Letter".

i ahve to disagree with that statement, i think covers vs. originals should be seen for what they are not who did it first - and based on the quality of each version. Case in point: Dylan wrote Watchtower - yeah its great, but its pretty commonly accepted that Hendrix did the definative version; so id give more credit to him than to Dylan for that one.

Cant wait to hear this new album, the american series has had some great moments

I've heard the Lightfoot cover, and I think while Johnny Cash sounds great, it can't compare with Gordon's version....just my thought's

Picked up the new album this morning. What a beautiful record! The man was literally on his death bed as he recorded it, and you can really hear it in his craggily voice on certain tracks. It really brings a tear to your eye. His final song, "Like the 309" is outstanding, and his versions of "If You Could Read My Mind" and "Four Strong Winds" are absolutely heartbreaking. Go buy it. NOW!
