MLB - 2008
#46

Quote:He is only hitting .167 with three homeruns and 11 runs batted in, quite a contrast from a season ago when he hit .277 with 26 home runs and 95 runs driven in.

someone would actually have less RBI and homeruns 3 weeks into a season than they did the entire season previous.. who knew?

I think it's stupid that they're not even gonna give him a chance to turn it around...instead they're penny pinching already and second guessing themselves less than a month in...pathetic.

If the Blue Jays call on Bonds' services in the next few weeks they could have something in common with musician Paul McCartney...both went after an old bat with one good leg......

The only thing that's pathetic is the size of Thomas' ego. They offered him a chance to turn it around - he was told he'd be playing 2-3 times a week. Presumably, in this situation if he had improved his performance they would have increased his playing time. Giving how badly he's been sh*tting the bed this year, it was a more than fair offer. Instead, the big cry baby refused and asked to be released if he wasn't going to be playing every day. Good riddance to him.

I had him on my FL bench throughout most of the day yesterday, planning to sit him because I wan't going to deal with another week of bloated ERA and WHIP categories.

But then I realized: a) it's Kansas City (last in MLB in runs scored, last in total bases), and b) law of averages was on his side.

Glad I started him!

Well the Jays are being the typical shit the bed Jays again.. can't say I'm surprised but I am disappointed.. their hitting with runners on has been absolutely atrocious. They were 1-16 or something tonight with runners on.. that is absolutely inexcusable. This is gonna be an extremely long frustrating season I think. I know its still early but they are in a lot of trouble right now. Vernon Wells has been playing like shit too after a pretty decent start.. Also, I knew getting rid of Reed Johnson was going to be a bad move, he's hitting .309 with the cubs while Shannon Stewart is hitting a whopping .212 with less at bats. Again, I know its still early, and there's still a ton of games to be played but its frustrating seeing them get swept by the Rays and losing the last 2 to the Royals.. seems like the same old year after year.. I like the players they have but they've pretty much all been underachieving

In the 5 games so far on this road trip they're up to 4 for 42 with runners in scoring position (that's .095 for those of you keeping score at home). And they've done it against the Rays and Royals no less. It's really beyond explanation. :nooooo

I know how frustrating the inability of your team to hit with runners on / RISP can be. The Reds have stuggled mightily in that department in past years, and still struggle with it (though two consecutive 10-run games versus two of SF's horrible starters have skewed those numbers for the better).

But I just wanted to say that you shouldn't view the struggles against the Rays' staff in same way you would the Royals. Tampa Bay is getting it done. Their pitching has been great:

MLB ranks, Rays pitching:

3rd in hits allowed
3rd in WHIP
4th in BAA
5th in ER allowed
5th in team ERA

And they completely shut down the Red Sox offense this weekend. I don't think their starters can sustain their current success, but thus far, they're doing the job.

No doubt they're off to a good start, but as you've pointed out it's only a month into the season and it remains to be seen whether their numbers will still look like that come September. This is after all the perennially bottom-feeding Tampa Rays we're talking about.

Right -- but you were talking about the Jays' recent scoring woes against the Rays staff, and recently, the Rays staff has been getting it done.

Perhaps they won't be getting it done when the Jays see them next....and perhaps, the Jays won't have the same trouble hitting with RISP vs. the Rays.

Well the Jays' struggles at the plate continued tonight - though I'll certainly give credit where it's due here, Lester pitched a great game for Boston, one-hitting the Jays through eight innings.

Speaking of great pitching performances, Roy Halladay turned in his 4th consecutive complete game tonight (no one else in MLB has more than one CG this season). Remarkably, he's taken the loss in the last 3 of those games. :nooooo

Vernon Wells needs to improve drastically.. I think he's been their worst player the last 3 weeks. And not just at the plate, he looks pretty bad in the outfield as well, and I'm not just talking about his game costing blunder tonight, he's looked lazy out there all year.

That is remarkable....and speaks not only to the lack of run support, but also to Gibbons' lack of confidence in his bullpen and his apparent confidence in Halladay's stamina (both in the short and long term).

Most managers, for instance, wouldn't run a guy out for the 8th and 9th innings with a two-run deficit, as Gibbons did with Halladay in the Texas game. Though i know Accardo has been struggling and Ryan is still getting up to speed.

Has Halladay ever had any arm injuries? I'm assuming he's one of those dudes with a rubber arm?
