Looks like Daredevil has an unassailable lead in the final first round match up, so I thought it was time for some stats.

Firstly, the composition of the 64, which was determined via the add 10, lose 10 elimination round but not announced in order to add a bit of mystery to proceedings. Here are the number of songs each album had in this year's Hip 64, with the number of songs progressing to the next round in brackets:

The Tragically Hip EP - 0 (0)
Up To Here - 6 (4)
Road Apples - 7 (3)
Fully Completely - 8 (5)
Day For Night - 8 (6)
Trouble at the Henhouse - 8 (5)
Phantom Power - 10 (5)
Music @ Work - 2 (1)
In Violet Light - 5 (1)
In Between Evolution - 4 (1)
World Container - 5 (1)
Other (Hipeponymous) - 1 (0)

Two numbers stand out regarding the 64's makeup: Phantom Power's 10 (only The Rules and Save The Planet didn't get an invite to the show); and Music @ Work's measly 2. Personally, I would have liked to see Tiger, Sharks and Wild Mountain Honey... but it's a matter of what songs to lose.

Then there's the batting averages, where Phantom Power doesn't look so all conquering. Just think what Day For Night could have managed if a) Nautical Disaster was eligible in 08 and b) Daredevil and Fire in the Hole didn't face off today.

And what about no album since 1996 having a winning percentage above 50%? Is anyone surprised? Probably not.

In fact, the average year of release for a winning song was 1995, and the average Y.o.R. for a loser was 1997 (to make a mathematically questionable observation).

This analysis completely misses the point that it all comes down to individual songs and matchups, but it was kind of fun to compile.

On a personal note, I voted for the song which ultimately won (perhaps "was more popular" is a better way of putting it) 56% of the time -- thanks in part to a run of four straight "wins" to end the first round.

I liked the stats post. I was wondering some of these things myself.
