tigerthelion Wrote:Esthete, who's that young kid that pitched for your team the other day? Not a bad outing for him.

Johnny Cueto.

Fans were clamoring for Homer Bailey to be brought up all last season, but most of the praise from scouts was going to Cueto, not Bailey. I've been waiting for Cueto to get a shot, and here he is.

He has incredible stuff, and uses it much more efficiently & effectively than Bailey. Bailey has some serious issues, imo - can't get ahead on hitters, can't throw anything but fastballs when he needs to make a pitch. That's not good. Hopefully he'll improve with minor league work.

Another guy to look out for is the other young pitcher in our rotation -- Edinson Volquez (acquired from Texas in the Hamilton trade). He made his first start for the Reds yesterday, and he looked damn good as well. I was sitting 5 rows behind the dugout yesterday, and boy was he poppin the glove.....saw him hit 98 on the gun a couple times, and has decent control of a nasty slider.

The Reds rotation AND bullpen seems to be improved...I'm hoping they truly are!

Griffey had a decent year last season, and played 144 games. Do you expect a similar season for him this year?

Hafner and C.C. are off to rough starts. Seems like Hafner hasn't done much since getting his big contract. The Tribe needs him to seriously contend this season.

I'm expecting about the same kind of year from Griffey.

I think he was somewhat taken by surprise at how quickly his aging body became vulnerable to injury, and after he played himself onto the DL several years in a row back in the early part of this decade, I think he learned that he had to dial it down in the outfield and on the basepaths.

But like any 20-year veteran, he's certainly injury-prone....so missing 50 games or more this year is certainly possible. Though I do think that the move to RF has helped him stay healthy as much his "scaling-back" has.

The thing about Griffey is that he's a flat-out good hitter; even though his power has diminished, he still has good plate presence and and that sweet, sweet swing.

I don't know what the deal with Hafner is, but I'm going to assume that even with the slow start, he'll post better numbers than last year. And CC better get his gigantic azz in gear. I spent my #4 pick on him in the Hipbase league. :?

I hope the Pronkinator gets his bat on track as I spent my #4 pick on him in Hipbase Baseball league. Esthete, if you don't want CC any more, I'm willing to trade ya a sackful of baseballs for him..... Tongue

Holy guacamole Borowski SUCKS!!! :x :x He sucked last year and he sucks this year. The Indians will NEVER win a title with him as their closer. He has horrible stuff and a dead arm. I keep hearing Twitchy (Wedge) talk about how much of a competitor he is, which is pretty much all he can credit him for being. I'll take a talented pitcher who CAN GET OUTS over a competitor who is a stiff anyday of the week. Of course, his apologists will point out that he did save over 40 games last season. That's all well and good until you look at his ERA, which was OVER 5.00. Heck, these things happen sometimes in sports- guys get wins/saves without actually being very good. Raycroft won 37 games last season, after all.

I completely agree. Do any of you Cleveland fans know why Rafael Betancourt hasn't gotten a shot at the job yet? I see that he's off to a poor start himself, but dude's got filthy closer-type stuff.

I think the Japanese pitcher the Indians got is the backup plan in case Borowski falters (which he has and will continue to do). I'm not sure if Betancourt can replicate his success from last season but he'd have to be better than Borowski. It certainly didn't go unnoticed to me that Westbrook pitched a complete game instead of Wedgie putting Borowski in the game to pitch the 9th. I think that Wedge knows Joe Blow sucks, and I just hope he doesn't stick with him too long this season.

 thats what I was thinking, and with the Masters this weekend my head is spinning..

I definitely don't like seeing should be wins blown like that.. these are the losses that bite teams in the ass at the end of the season when they're scratching for a playoff spot... hopefully the pen will tighten up, those type of losses are inexcusable

I don't hate him at all. I fear his every at-bat. That's what made his four strikeouts so sweet -- how damn good he is.

Brutal effort by the Jays tonight. They've scored a whopping 2 runs in their last 20 innings of baseball. If they're serious about being contenders they can't afford to lose too many series to teams like Oakland, let alone get swept.
