3:00 its over, not a very exciting trade deadline compared to past years.

Im surprised Montreal didnt do more, not just a superstar deal, but something, we gave Huet away and thats it. I like our team, we'll make the playoffs but it will take a lot to go deep. I think Pittsburgh gave up too much if Hossa is a rental, not sure how they can keep Hossa, Crosby and Malkin on the same team for years, Malkin and Hossa will want big raises.

Some trades could still come in after 3pm, maybe well get more..

I thought giving away Huet would open up room to make a big deal. I don't understand why they threw him away to clear cap space and only got a 2nd round pick out of it, they should have gotten more than that. Hopefully they grab a big U.F.A. this summer or something

As a Leafs fan it hurts me to see what Hossa got as a rental and to think what mighta been..............

How do you know they were clearing cap space? Huet is an unrestricted free agent, and he may have been eyeing greener pastures.

People who think Huet was somehow a vital piece of the puzzle in Montreal need to think again. This team is not underpinned by goaltending. And the fact they only got a second-round pick for him says a lot about how desirable other GMs think he is. Montreal has Halak to replace him, who has played well. This isn'd the disaster people are making it out to be -- blame all the silly hype surrounding the trade deadline, which has everyone expecting a blockbuster.

Disappointing that Mtl lost out on Hossa, but I'm thinking the asking price was just too high. The fact they called up Grabowski has me thinking they were trying to put something together right down to the wire.

Skip is right, it sucks we didnt land a superstar player..but Bob Gainey is no moron, if the deal wasnt right for Montreal he wouldnt make it, he made his offer and after seeing what Pittsburgh gave up for Hossa, Im not surprised Gainey didnt land him. Im sure they wanted Higgins and it wasnt going to happen.

Huet was never going to be re-signed this summer anyways, at least we got something for him.

Pittsburgh with Hossa, and Crosby back on his feet, and Malkin continuing to play at the same level he's been at ... that team looks like a serious contender. So the price may have been right for them.

Montreal with Hossa wouldn't look as good.

You just can't outbid a guy who really, really wants to win the auction.

Not to forget some of these players (Campbell, Hossa..etc) are rental players they could still be available as free agents this summer. Im sure Gainey will look to the free agent market this summer, not sure who the big names are going to be this year, maybe we'll get someone that way instead, at least we wont have to give up any players.

Montreal is playing alot better than anyone expected this year, Im really happy with the team this year, lets just see how far they can go and cheer them on. Were going to make the playoffs thats a bonus, enjoy the ride and next year we can make a more serious challenge hopefully with a new superstar player on the roster.

Pitt gave up practically nothing, IMO. Armstrong is a third line plugger, Christensen is a guy who doesn't really do anything other than look good in a shootout every once in a while, Esposito is a prospect who has bust written all over him. What is the 1st rounder Pittsburgh gave up? It's not gonna be all that high, is it?

As for the Canucks, I think Pettinger was the missing ingredient. Nonis really did a great job this year at the deadline. :roll:

As for the Leafs, Fletcher did all he could, IMO. With the players exercising their right not to be traded, he couldn't do much. Getting anything at all for Belak was a good deal.

The Caps did well. They didn't give up much. They upgraded the goaltender position and got Federov for very little. Now, Federov may not do much but it's a risk worth taking with him. It's not like Federov will take the place of a better player than him on the roster. They also took Cooke away from Vancouver, which probably isn't a good move for them, but it made me happy.

That's exactly what I was thinking. When they said Montreal couldn't match that deal I was suprised.

Skip, after thinking about it a little more, I agree with you. I have faith in Price, and even though it might be a little early for him to be the full time guy, maybe the faith Gainey is showing in him will give him a lot of confidence, time will tell I guess.

Also, I wasn't aware that Huet was a u.f.a. in the summer, but the 3 million they freed up will help them out with summer signings especially considering the cap is going to go up.
