It can be a good idea but when multiple albums get released at the same time it can seem like a cash grab (GNR's Use Your Illusion I & II spring to mind immediately). But given how CDs are going down in price lately in the face of internet music, that's seeming like less of an issue.
But anyway if the band has enough material waiting to put out two good albums go for it. You can either do a case where the double is the same or the differing styles like Foo Fighters' In Your Honour.
Also, for mentioning some good double albums, I really got into BNL's Barenaked Ladies Are Me/Barenaked Ladies Are Men albums this past year. Released a few months apart but definitely in the same vein as a double album.
