Had to give away extras to get people I know to go see The Hip. The most common response is "The who?"

Been seeing The Hip for over 12 years. Been seeing Mule for about as long. So far, last night blew away most anything I've seen out of The Hip since Irving Plaza 10+ years ago.

Grace Potter ain't too shabby either. But then again, you've probably heard of her as much as anyone around here has heard of The Weakerthans.

I Have Grace Potters new album, it is great! Ah Mary is song of the year in my book. Great Rip on Bush.
Never seen Mule, if I had even known they were coming to toronto I would have gone. Their skill set is certainly higher than the hip, I would have to see if they put on a better show

Comments like this crack me up! How exactly are you evaluating their "skill sets" versus one another?

And, assuming that there is some objective way to measure their skills, and that Gov't Mule end up on top, how does that have any bearing on whether they put on a better show?

It doesn't have any bearing on weather they put on a better show at all Chris, that is why I said I would have to see if they put on a better show, I only know of a couple of bands or artists that put on a better show than the Hip. No doubt that Mule has more talented musicians than the Hip in my mind is all, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I will never knock that.

Only went to one Mule show, but saw Grace Potter out at Telluride Blues & Brews last month. She rocks. Her band ain't half bad either! Got some nice pics from T-Ride of their performance. Saw the Mid-Atlantic Blues festival in Atlantic City two weeks ago (Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Tab Benoit, some really great old blues guys and then and after show at the HOB at the Showboat...Radiators. Tab Benoit and Bob Margolin joined Radiators for a few songs.

I got no problem with another great rendition of "Wang Dang Doodle". ..give it up to Willie Dixon.

So I need a dose of Hip. NYC for the first time since Irving Plaza. That should warm me up for Philly the next night. Train to either on is a little over an hour. Shorter to drive to Philly. Venue in NYC is right near Penn Sta., so I'll just hop the train and walk about a block.

i think the problem here is that gov't mule is in a more selective field of music... the infamous "jam band scene"

they are definitely not as widespread in Canada as the Hip, but have a much larger fanbase in the states than the Hip too (all the Allman Bros Band fans come out to Mule's shows too)

the two types of music are fairly different...the hip versus southern rock

that being said, ive seen both these bands a number of times (the hip 10 and mule 8) and in terms of who puts on a "better" show...that entirely depends on what you're looking for

mule is an amazing band with one of the world's best guitarists. they guarentee 2 sets of music every night, a stellar light show and will rarely play the same song 2 nights in a row (they are excellent at mixing up the setlist).

i dont need to describe what the hip do, since everyone here knows.

all in all...i think gov't mule puts on a better live show (they are not necessarily a better band)
ive seen them 3 times since sept 14th and 6 times since this june
something about going to a show and not hearing the "greatest hits" or 8-10 repeats on back to back nights is highly appealing
no song is guarenteed at a Mule concert...
whereas I feel it's a special occasion if I go through a Hip concert without hearing Blow, NOIS, M@W or ABAC

mule's diversity wins them my vote
the hip are on par in terms of an energetic concert + lighting
they just need to mix things up a little bit more to make seeing them on back to back nights more interesting

maybe im biased cause ive seen mule so much recently..
but go see both bands and then tell me what you think

I disagree. I believe I know Warren Haynes, Matt Abt & Andy Hess well enough to know they would disagree as well. They would, as I know them, be nothing but respectful and inspired by The Hip. I think the one opening up the other would be a great pairing.

Saw The Hip on SNL and said "I got to see that band"...and did. The one thing I will note is that The Hip USED to be a jam band...they would rock one tune into another and let the chips fall where they may. The Hip doesn't seem to take those chances anymore. Set set lists and predictable transitions between songs. Thats okay, you pay for what you get, and I'm will to pay for what The Hip gives.

But I'm always waiting for them to hit the throttle...to let it loose and run with the jam. I'll go to see them just hoping they do...'cause when the hip cut it loose and just jam, they're the hottest band on the planet.
