Looks like Alexei Yashin's NHL days are over, at least for the time being. He's signed a 1 year deal to play in Russia. One of my all-time favorite players, Petr Nedved, did likewise yesterday, inking a 1 year deal to play in the Czech Republic.

Apparently there are times when Bettman acts like a complete ass. I supported the lockout because small market teams like Buffalo were getting priced out by the big market teams. Now this whole fiasco with Leipold, Bettman and Basillie just makes me even more frustrated with the league. KC will never, ever have the fan base to make a team there financially viable. I can understand Bettman's theory of making hockey bigger and more popular, i.e. get NHL hockey in more American cities (sort of like "build it and they will come" idea), but I think the NHL will only grow and thrive if they stay close to their roots, i.e. northern states and Canada, and do some serious investment in high school and junior league hockey in the States to get more kids interested in the game. Then an expansion down South makes more sense.

While Bettman is the name attached to this, if you guys don't think it is MLSE and the Sabres behind this nonsense, you are kidding yourselves.
There was an interesting article in the Globe yesterday about how the PA supports the sale of the Preds to Basillie and the move to Hamilton because it will increase league-wide revenues (whereas a move to KC would likely only drain revenues). Should be interesting to see how serious the owners are about their supposed "partnership" with the players.
