Speaking of symbolism in music (sure this could have been a new thread, but I segued it by using "speaking of...") and speaking of Gus, this idea sort of hit me after the London show, I guess in part to the proper mix of chemicals swimming through my brain at the time.

Is "Gus:TPBFCP" about America's downfall? Sure, go ahead and call me Ameri-centric (even though it's not a word) or call me a guilt-ridden, paranoid American, but check these lyrics out:

"Nothing goes quiet." Many events that have led to global black eyes for America, most of which would have been much easier to keep quiet back in the day.

"Overhearing conversations", "sound demented". We sure do overhear many conversations - we call it "enemy chatter" - almost always resulting in something negative. Will it lead to Terror Alert Yellow, Orange or even RED?! Feeding the "if you see something say something mentality. Perpetual nervousness will make anyone demented after awhile, especially we pampered Americans.

"Everything he sees is something to kill and eat." Put your own interpretation on that one. If you buy into the American imperialism theories, that one is easy. Or maybe a statement on aggressive foreign mentalities/polices? Or the boisterous arrogant American sense of entitlement so many of our citizens and policymakers have?

"What's troubling Gus? Is it nothing goes quiet?
Is that what's troubling ya Gus the mere mention of the name
used to be enough to make every bird stop singing?
Is that what's troubling ya Gus? No is afraid enough?"

For me this one hits home the hardest. The big superpower has become fat and lazy, laden with debt, running out of resources, and nationalistic pride (the same pride that help make the country so great in the first place!). Our enemies don't fear us, we are unable to achieve success in our military conflicts, world opinion on us sinks lower and lower, the list of our supporters shrink.

The big bad polar bear, sitting all by himself on his melting iceberg, starving away...

This has nothing really to do with the video but I was just doing some more research on Gus (don't ask me why :roll: ) and I didn't know that there actually was a polar bear in the Central Park zoo named Gus. Building a Toyota Prius causes more environmental damage than a Hummer that is on the road for three times longer than a Prius. As already noted, the Prius is partly driven by a battery which contains nickel. The nickel is mined and smelted at a plant in Sudbury, Ontario. This plant has caused so much environmental damage to the surrounding environment that NASA has used the ‘dead zone’ around the plant to test moon rovers. The area around the plant is devoid of any life for miles.

The plant is the source of all the nickel found in a Prius’ battery and Toyota purchases 1,000 tons annually. Dubbed the Superstack, the plague-factory has spread sulfur dioxide across northern Ontario, becoming every environmentalist’s nightmare.

“The acid rain around Sudbury was so bad it destroyed all the plants and the soil slid down off the hillside,” said Canadian Greenpeace energy-coordinator David Martin during an interview with Mail, a British-based newspaper.

When you pool together all the combined energy it takes to drive and build a Toyota Prius, the flagship car of energy fanatics, it takes almost 50 percent more energy than a Hummer - the Prius’s arch nemesis.

To respond to most of the posts so far (too many to quote):

My friend's mom worked on this video. She did make-up. It wasn't an open set, so I wasn't allowed to go meet Gord. I asked. Repeatedly. I was under the impression it was shot around Buntzen Lake, which is in a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia. It's a beautiful place. If any of you ever come here in the summer, go hiking there. However, it looks like parts of it were shot around the Capilano Resevoir in North Vancouver. I'll ask for confirmation.

I don't think that the bear in the vid is a polar bear. I think it is a white brown bear (spirit bear, only found on the islands of BC)
