Your first post.
#1

As I reach somewhat of a milestone, I think its time to look back and reflect on my first post on hipbase.com .

buzz882 Wrote:This was my first THip concert. I owned three of their albums prior to the concert. I had second row tickets and beackstage passes. The concert was thorough and all around amazing. "Long Time Running" was a particular treat. Since the concert i have purchased all of the other eight albums (and the EP). Next time they come anywhere near where I'm at, I will go, and I will glady pay as much money as requested.

What a newb I was! Anyways, I'm glad I found this place where I can share my passion for this amazing group which I have grown to appreciate so much. Thanks, Lance, for your amazing vision. This simple idea of a Tragically Hip "community" has spawned into an internet phenomenon. Well, to Hip fans at least :thumb:

So everyone, do a little research, and post your first post here!

I'm going to listen to Daredevil as a celebration.

screw_ball Wrote:I'm absolutely positive that the majority of you have seen Christopher Mills' Macroscopic, and I'm pretty sure a good number of you loved it. Well, for those who have seen it, you know that the imagery and the audio tell two different stories most of the time. That's why sometimes I mute the film when I watch it, and that's why I decided to make a Macroscopic "album". I thought it would be interesting to turn off the lights and listen to it with some headphones, so I ripped the audio from the DVD and burned it to a CD. It was actually quite surprising. The images in my head were completely different from those in the film, and it lead to a much different experience. After listening to it, I decided I could take it farther. I decided to divide it into tracks, since it was basically just a 45-minute lump. Not very listener friendly. While I was seperating it, I realized that I should had to name each track something...

And it went on from there. It quickly evolved into a 26-track "album", art and all. I want to upload it to TheHundredthMeridian.com's wonderful FTP, but I'm concerned with the legality of all this. I mean, since it's my own interpretation and all, I think that if I contact someone in place to give me permission, it'll be fine. Does anyone know if I'm not allowed to do this?

Anyway, I just thought I'd share it with those interested, and I'll happily send it to anyone who wants to give it a listen. But keep in mind that this is a rough cut, and some of the transitions are a bit choppy. The art will probably change, too.

So, tell me what you think of all this.
I completely forgot about this.

Here's mine:

Quote:IVL: Throwing Off Glass
M@W: As I Wind Down The Pines
PP: Thompson Girl
TATH: Coconut Cream
DFN: Inevitability of Death
FC: Locked In The Trunk Of A Car
RA: Three Pistols
UTH: 38 Years Old (I know Gord refuses to play it, but please!)
EP: I'm A Werewolf, Baby

It was a wish list of rarities to hear live. So far, of that list, I've only heard Pistols live. I'd still love to hear IOD, Locked, and 38YO. Yes, I'm still holding out hope for that last one.

From the "Introduce Yourself" thread:

jay420 Wrote:Hey guys.

New here, but not to the Hip. A friend got me into the Hip in '93-94. I saw them live for the first time at ARA in '95. I've also seen them at ARA '97, NYD 2000, the Music without Borders show, twice in the summer of '02, the first Hummingbird show, and the last bash @ Barrie. I will be seeing them live for the 9th time Sunday @ Wasaga.

I have to admit, the Hip aren't my #1 band (but they are a close #2.) My favourite is Metallica. I've seen Metallica live 7 times (and 4 times in the last year, in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary & Winnipeg.)

Metallica and the Hip may seem like a strange pair for favourite bands since their musical styles are totally different... but they are both amazing live bands, and I think that is one of the big reasons why I like them both so much.

As a little update... I haven't seen the Hip live since Wasaga, but will be seeing them in Guelph on June 18th and hopefully again in Stratford in September if the rumours are true. I have seen Metallica 4 more times since that post and won a meet & greet with them 2 days before my birthday!

Posted: Thu Oct 17, 2002 7:58 am Post subject: Tornto #2 - Setlist and Rants

chris Wrote:Another terrific performance.

Here's the setlist, and some bits of the rants. There were many tapers
present tonight. I saw two cameras, front row center in the balcony. I hope
these shows become available.

Setlist In Order (quotes by Gord)
1. Silver Jet - Gord made noises that sounded like Morse code.
2. NOIS - a mention of the dorsel fin, and SWIM! Not to me, But to him,
SWIM!
3. Fully Completely - "With the loyalty of a fruitfly, it turned and left."
The band started out a little slower than usual but picked it up after the
first verse.

4. Chagrin Falls - An amazing extended musical outro.
5. Al Tore Up - The "tonight, tonight, tonight" section was repeated many
times, and Gord was really giv'n it!
6. Bobcaygeon - "I'm in love with a cop, and I ain't gonna stop!" Gord also
sang/said something about the way that dust clings to the air after a
stranger has been there.
7. Nautical - The crowd noise was overwhelming, and the guys in the band
seemed to take note. A little rant at the end about being in the water, and
the damage that a fifteen foot propeller could do.
8. Darkest One - "I know you're here. By the end of the show, I will know!"
9. Fireworks
10. Good Life - "This one's called The Luminus Vale, or It's A Good Life..."
11. Meridian - "Guess what? We're at the 100th Meridian!"
"I remember Toronto, how could I forget. It's your set." Also the life is
forgetting song again, but this time the band totally switched out of 100th,
and played a different song while Gord worked on the lyrics.

I also think that Gord mocked the Queen. He did a Queen-like wave, and said,
"everybody" with a funny accent.

12. Greasy Jungle - "By now you all know, this takes place in a hair salon.
Salon in the basement, family upstairs. It's a Greasy Jungle in there!"
13. Giftshop
14. Springtime in Vienna
15. Dark Canuck - "This is a dedication. A dedication to you Toronto,
because it goes on and on."
16. 50 Mission Cap - "They're calling off the search. It's as simple as
that."
17. Blow - Gord did his best Elvis impressions throughout this song.

Encore #1
1. Use It Up
2. Grace, Too - "You're a microphone. Without a stand. What makes you think
you could make it on dry land. You're a microphone, and I'm a man. Now I've
got you in my right hand."
3. The Wherewithal - " 'course he got out. He had the wherewithal!"

Encore #2
1. Wheat Kings
2. Poets

The irony of my request for this show... Three years later these tapes were in my possession and a DVD was being readied for torrenting.

7. The Tragically Hip, rock music
The quintessential Canadian rock band also likes to write about hockey along with assorted darker subjects. Unlike most of the biggest Canadian celebrities who had to first make it in the United States to reach widespread acclaim; The Hip became big in Canada without reaching more than cult status in the States. That's great for us fans south of the 49th Parallel because we can go see their incredible live show and lead singer Gord Downie's rambling rants in small theaters instead of arenas. Not breaking big in the States was once puzzling to fans, but it has become the band's cachet and like hockey, another great Canadian export that inexplicably hasn't caught on with widespread acceptance by the Yanks. But unlike the NHL's lap dance with TV networks over the past 10 years, at least The Hip still have their integrity and street cred from Yellowknife to St. John's.

If you check your own profile and select "find all posts", then go to the last page of the results, you should see your first contribution to the board. That being said, here's mine:
Jenna_Bird Wrote:Hi all. My name is Jenna and I'm a student here in Syracuse. I'm a huge Hip fan and am recently new to the band (1997). I've seen the Hip 4 times (2x in Philly, Once in Buffalo, and another time in Syacuse), and Gord as a solo act once (in Philly). I enjoy spending time with my boyfriend, (who I met at a Hip show), acting, reading, writing, and music (hip, bnl, ben folds, counting crows, etc). That's about all I have to say for now. :thumb:

I don't know. There's some discomfort in reading that... I sound so...young. *shudder* Granted, I was only 19 at the time, so I suppose I can't be too hard on my former self.

Oh. Not to ruin the party, but shouldn't this be in the Non-Tragically Hip Discussion?
