Time has passed and I still like "World Container" very much. I've changed my preference on some of the songs but all in all, I can't say I'm tired of it. My new list of tracks in order of best to worst is:

I'm liking it pretty damn well, too....I like it much better than IBE.
Haven't heard any recent discussion about "overproduction" -- perhaps those for whom this was a major gripe have warmed up to the sound once they've had the chance to get familiar with the content? Personally, I think this record sounds incredible, and that the engineering is impeccable. The percussion and bass sound better on WC than any other Hip record -- they both sound full, clean, and pure, and not at the expense of mid and high range frequencies.
I'm also a huge fan of "Yer Not the Ocean" -- it's a close second to LNIDYDLM . Though I do have a small gripe about this cut -- and that is the song's finale. I absolutely LOVE that piano iso, and I wish they would have drawn out that segment for a longer duration, and then brought the guitars, bass and percussion for a big, triumphant close. As it is, the song ends with an abruptness that seems completely illogical and ill-timed. It bugs me to no end. It lacks the proper closure for such a tightly-knit, high-energy theme. Grr.

"In View" is definitely the song I like the least on WC, but I still dig it. I wasn't a big fan of the xylophone at first, but now I can't imagine the song without it. As bad as Coconut Cream?? Not by a longshot. I haven't heard a catchier song all year, except maybe "Sunday Morning" by K-OS.
I'm surprised that some folks haven't warmed up to "Rink". In my opinion, that tune is an instant Hip classic. Gord's vocals are fantastic, Robby's chiming guitar melody is pure perfection, and I absolutely LOVE the dance-rock breakdowns. Musically the Hip have never attempted anything like it before, and I think they pull it off brilliantly. Not to mention the fact that the song just plain f**king ROCKS (especially live). I also find the lyrics to be quite touching. It was apparently written about Gord's dad, and everytime I hear the song I always think back to my own dad driving me to the rink at 6 in the morning when I was a kid and looking up and seeing him in the stands, very much like Gord's experience with his own father as a young netminder. "If you need me, you're on your own." I love that line.

I just tried to do this and found it too hard to rank any of these in last place without feeling a little guilty! im the guy that even likes coconut cream.In fact I listened to it obssesively when it came out.With everything in life the e.p has its highs and lows,but when all is said and done its music like this that gets me through any given day! peace

IMO...
1. Kids: Has a great "fuck you" feel to it, even better live, and seeing it live makes it even better to listen to on album.
2. Family Band: also better live, chorus melody is great, and somehow manages to stay just "a shade shy" of a personal hesitation for bands writing songs about being in bands.
3. Luv(sic): My favorite sounding song on the album. If I could hope for a future direction for the band's sound, it would be this Lanois-eque route.
4. Ocean: Best Hip album opener since "Poets", better on album than live if only because of the sneaky shot of piano at the end. Love that bit.
5. WC: Great finish to the album. Different and leaves questions such as "How would they play this live?" and "Will they continue with this sound in their next album?"
6. In View: Love it or hate it, it's got guts and did its job. How many pages of postings did this particular song lead to? And people still when ahead and bought the album. Can't ask for much more from a lead single.
7. Rink: Great idea for a theme of father-son support masked in the Hip/Hockey motif, but I listen to it pretty much for the same reason I watch the Canucks (i.e. 'cause it's there and I may as well, but not I'm really excited by it.).
8. The Drop Off: It's okay, but it helps that "Family Band" comes right after for a needed shot of melody. I like the song better when seeing/hearing it live because it gives you a sense of how tight the band is.
9. LNIDYDLM: Suffers immensely from its place in the album's song order, i.e. being right after "Pretend" (see #11).
10. Fly: Also suffers from its place in the track order. I really don't need to hear it after "In View". I'll take one or the other. Nine times out of ten, I'll go with "In View" (unless having heard it 50 times on the radio already.)
11. Pretend: I have a hard time with this one. Its stock has not gone up with increased listens. I almost always skip it and it ends up taking LNIDYDLM down with it.
At this point I don't think the Hip will have one of those studio albums that (for me) works from opening moment to closing song, i.e. where you never skip a track. Like a Dark Side of the Moon or an Abbey Road, or a Joshua Tree. Or, more recently, something like Radiohead's OK Computer or Catherine Wheel's Adam & Eve (well, I guess 1997 isn't so recent anymore). They get close, but it's never the definitive Hip album you could give someone and say, "okay, now listen to this start to end and get back to me."
Live recordings - or albums even - are a different story. Unlike pressing play on a new Hip album, whenever they take the stage I still get a feeling like they could pull off the perfect show from start to end. I like this better than hoping for the perfect studio album, at least for this band.

I don't get all you people who hate In View so much. its a damn happy song, and i can't help but smile when i hear it.
ohh and to the guy dissing the wherewithal and fire in the hole, you just lost any and all credibility by bashing those tunes...

I think WC may be the most solid album the Hip have released in a couple of years. It has a good flow from track to track. I can see why some folks don't like like In View, but I like its 80's retro feel.
