Neil Young archives
#1

I'm sure you know this, but I thought it was worth sharing anyway. Neil Young is releasing ALL his music as an online digital archive on December 1 http://ultimateclassicrock.com/neil-youn...-archives/

"Every single, recorded track or album I have produced is represented," Young promised when announcing his plans for the online archive earlier this year. "It is always current. You can browse the music I made between today's date and 1963, when I made my first recording in Canada and it was released as a 45 RPM single."

Not only that, he's going to play a live show that night...and it looks like it might be in Omemee. https://t.co/UWXPqNGcf3
That'd be amazing - especially for those lucky enough to get in. No further details yet, so hopefully we hear something soon -- especially for those of us who live in the area.

My two musical heroes are Neil Young and Gord Downie. Seeing Neil at a small intimate show like this would be medicine for my soul.

I'll be very interested to listen to some of the older unreleased material, but as far as I'm concerned he's lost the plot in the past 10 years. The last album I really enjoyed was Prairie Wind. It's been slim pickings since then, to the point that I haven't even listened to the last few albums. I can't keep up. He needs someone in his camp to exert some quality control.

That picture of Gord and Neil was framed and on the wall of his home in Toronto. I'm sure he would have ranked sharing a microphone with Neil in his top ten musical moments.

If you haven't listened to Neil's latest, I do believe you're missing out on some Gems.

I love the live album Earth, and Peace Trail was 10/10 for me.

I just had a look at the discography. He's released 12 albums over the past 12 years. I've given 6-7 a try but haven't truly enjoyed anything since Prairie. Have you listened to them all? Is Peace Trail the best of the bunch? I'll give it a go...

So out of the last 12 years, I've listened to them all it looks like. My top studio albums from that list would be Chrome Dreams II, Fork In The Road, Peace Trail, and Hitchhiker (Hitchhiker is a compilation of unreleased classics, and alternate acoustic versions of some well known classics).

Peace Trail is stripped down acoustic, with a little bit of electronic influence (a la Trans). I love it.

Earth is a great listen (Hippie Dream is one of my all time fav. Neil songs.... great to hear an alternate version of it, even though I secretly love the production of Landing on Water.)

Prairie Wind is/was an instant classic There is just such a comforting warmth to it, every song on it is just perfect. I remember saying to a friend that the album was "like a Hudson's Bay blanket wrapped around you on a cold Canadian winter night". They kind of oddly starred at me and walked away, but I know some others might get the metaphor :thumb:

Neil can be hit and miss, for sure. I don't really have a problem with that -- I see it more as the Gord philosophy of "use it up, don't save a thing for later." He makes albums he's really into at the moment -- some connect and are brilliant, some aren't. But either way, he's not filtered by any external expectations - the music is in him and it just needs to escape. So, since Prairie Wind, which I absolutely love too, here are the albums I recommend:

Living With War(2006) -- the heavy-handed politics might not be for everyone, but I love this record. "After The Garden" is a classic
Chrome Dreams II (2007) -- I could listen to "Ordinary People" on a loop until the end of time and never get sick of it.
Americana (2012) -- an album of covers, yes, but I love these songs. Grew up around the campfire singing these songs -- Crazy Horse's crunchy take on them is :thumb:
Psychedelic Pill (2012) -- badass Crazy Horse rock n roll. Top to bottom, a great record. "Walk Like a Giant," "Ramada Inn" "She's Always Dancing" "Born in Ontario" -- love these songs.
Hitchhiker (2016) -- cheating a bit as this was recorded in 1976...but my god it's a thing of exquisite beauty.

Sandwiched between these releases are other albums that don't really do it for me, but hey, if Psychedelic Pill is a fresh piece of delicious salmon sushi, then I see albums like Fork in Road (2009) as the ginger palate cleanser in between.

What a fantastic centerpiece to that album.

My 2 cents... he produces art as he sees fit

I third this. Great album!

I noticed that nobody here mentioned "Le Noise", the album he did with Daniel Lanois. While certainly not his best, there are a handful of gems on that one (Walk With Me, Love and War, Hitchhiker, Peaceful Valley Boulevard).

I do enjoy Le Noise, however the songs I like the best on it, I prefer different versions that are around (Hitchhiker on Hitchhiker, Walk With Me on the PJ20 soundtrack is insanely good)

Confirmed: Neil Young is playing in Omemee on Friday night, December 1st...in the town hall that seats 200. Oh, to be one of the lucky ones who gets to be there! For the rest of us it will be streamed live on CTV and Facebook. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to Omemee so I can hide out in the basement of the hall until Friday night...

Neil and Promise of the Real have really fucking progressed together.

After one listen, I can tell you that I'm pretty sure this will hold up way better than The Mansoto Years. The Earth live album is also fantastic. Some great grunge and country Neil moments.

I guess the show tonight is acoustic, which is a shame because there's some great rock songs on here... but the lots of acoustic on the record.

I guess the archive goes live at 8pm est tonight, when the show starts. Can't wait to see what this is actually all about.

I haven’t checked out the Archive yet, but I did watch the Omemee show online last night. My god, it was incredible. I hope everyone who wanted to watch it did. I can’t wait to get a hold of the audio - I want to add “Live From Omemee” to my Neil collection. He sounded great, it was well produced, and the setlist kicked ass. Acoustic version of “Don’t Be Denied”? C’mon. Amazing!

I drove through Omemee on the way home yesterday, just as this beauty was pulling into Coronation Hall.

I stopped hoping to see Neil, but I didn’t. I did see Darryl Hannah, Randy Bachman, and Neil’s brother Bob (who’s a local) hanging around outside. Lots of excitement in air.

Neil and Gord are my two favourite artists...so last night’s show was soothing medicine for my soul. This Fall started terribly, but is ending on a very positive note. Thank you, Neil!
