On what was already a shit Monday with the news from Vegas, this was devastating to hear.

I've spent countless hours listening to Petty, starting with Full Moon Fever in '89 and then working backwards. One of my all-time favourite concerts is seeing Petty at Bonnaroo in 2006. There was an 80,000 strong "Petty" chant going in the minutes prior to his arrival stage that was amazing. "Can I jam for you?" he said, and the place went crazy. At one point he brought out Stevie Nicks and said,"I told you that you were going to have fun, didn't I?" Stevie and Tom did a version of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" that was spine tingling and she then hung around for "Need to Know", "American Girl" and a few others. It was an unbelievable night of music.

Gonna listen to Wildflowers tonight. RIP Tom.

I was the youngest in my family, my older brother being 12 years older than me really introduced me to music at a very early age. He was already into Dylan, Neil Young, Tom Petty etc when I was literally a tot in kindergarten. My love of music started so early and Tom was going to be my first concert, my brother was going to take me to see him during the Hard Promises tour in 1981, I was only 11..... but then a girl got in the way and guess who ended up going. I got over the loss of missing that tour but never got over my love of Tom Petty and we did end up going to see him four other times over the years.

This one really hurts, its unreal to think if never seeing him again.

I can't help but post this, one of my all time favourites. I will never understand how this received ZERO airplay and wasn't a huge hit for him. It went relatively unnoticed and I was even surprised to find a live version of it on youtube. So, thank you Tom, thank you for everything, and "wherever you are tonight, I wish you the best of everything, in the world and I hope you found, whatever you were looking for" Sad

as a 40 yr old American. i can honestly say i don't remember a day without Petty. Anytime i played in a band, we would cover one of his songs. I always felt that it was impossible to hate Tom Petty. that everyone knew and loved him. he transcended to all audiences.

This is true.

You always knew you could put on Tom Petty and folks with very disparate taste is music would still be pleased.

Johnny Cash and CCR are the only other ones I can think of with that sort of universal appeal.

I loved that man Sad

I will not give up. My face is set,my gait is fast,my goal is heaven,my road is narrow,my way is rough,my companions are few,my guide is reliable,my mission is clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, diluted or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of adversity, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity,or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I will not give up,shut up or slow down....Blessed Be!
