The One Song You Never Tire Of
#1

The great Brooklyn band The National played a “living art” show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in 2013 called “A Lot of Sorrow” where they played their song “Sorrow” for 6 hours straight. Six f**king hours! That’s 105 times, never once veering from the set list. As the museum noted at the time, “…the artist continues his explorations into the potential of repetitive performance to produce sculptural presence within sound.”

The concept is absolutely ridiculous but I admire the band’s stamina in this mind-numbing pursuit. I was thinking about this performance in the context of the Hip and was wondering what I would have wanted them to play should I ever have had tickets to such a performance. I would not choose my favourite song as I would probably never want to hear it again after the event. I would want a song with a range of dynamics, a song that I have not over-played myself, and a song that I’ve heard very little in a live setting.

That song for me would be Put It Off. I has varying dynamics; the slow, burning intensity to open, the ferocious chorus, the blistering solo in the last third, followed by a soft close. It is the perfect album closer. It’s also the song I would chose for the Hip if they were faced with a 6 hour loop. I’ve only seen the song played once live (December 1996 on the TATH tour) and I personally haven’t overplayed it due to its placement at the end of an album. (I think all 10th, 11th, and 12th songs suffered some degree of neglect in my CD collection back in the day due to time constraints, a short attention span, or someone wanting to change up the music at a party. The highly underrated Put It Off was probably no different.)

If I keep the same parameters of a 6 hour show that would give time for 68 performances of Put It Off. I think I could make it through at least 3-4 hours, but I have serious doubts that I could make it the full 6 hours. Is there any Hip song you could listen to repetitively for 6 hours straight and not go insane?

6 hours is indeed ridiculous. But if you're holding a gun to my head, I guess I'd have to go with Grace, Too. The Hip have probably played that song every night since 1994, and I've never grown tired of it. It's an absolute beast. Especially during the outro when both Gord D. and Robby let loose. Also have to give props to Gord Sinclair for what is arguably the greatest bass line in Canadian music history.

The Depression Suite
Live: 10 minutes
6 times per hour
36 times in total
And kinda cheating because it's 3 songs in 1

Half-way through the OP's second paragraph "Put it Off" was my first thought.

Great topic, and great choice.

I think I'd just pick a song I hate, because by the end of 6 hours, I'm guaranteed to hate the song forever. So might as well not ruin a good song, and just suffer through a song I already don't like. The Depression Suite is a great choice for me since I already don't like that song and it's the longest one in the catalog.

Don't know about 6 hours but the one I could listen to the longest would be "The Darkest One". For me it's got everything that makes The Hip great and a hilarious video that would be running through my head the whole time.

I went thru a period of...years, basically, where I listened to "Grace Too" (the "Jesus Christ it's a big fucking bear!" version) on repeat all day long, for days at a time. Week after week, month after month. Just that song. I estimate I've listened to that song more than 10,000 times, but the kicker is I've never heard the same song twice. That's art, motherfuckers (& by motherfuckers I means comrades)

So yeah, to witness it live over & over would probably short-circuit my brain with bliss, lol. But what a way to go.

I would choose The Depression Suite...for reasons mentioned above by Tthip...and although I strongly disagree with Tomacco's assessment of The Depression Suite, he's got a point about being driven mad after 6 hours of the same song. So you wanna get nuts? Let's get nuts! I change my choice to 'Coconut Cream'.

The Dark Canuck...one of my favourites that rarely gets played, and is also long, although not quite as long as Depression Suite.

Ditto. Call it a warhorse if you want, but I could hear Grace Too over and over again and that intro would still give me goosebumps.

I have kind of always equated it to The Stones "Gimmie Shelter". Again, a bit of a warhorse, but similar "dark" vibe to it and every time I hear the into, arm hair stands on end.

Grace Too is one of those songs that can absorb everything you throw at it & it just keeps kicking off sparks. Peak collaboration sound-wise between the two Gords. & it has that cinematic quality that all the hip's best stuff has.

6 hours

Christ, there's nothing I'd wanna hear straight

Flamenco is hypnotic enough that I could go into an altered state by hour three

The Last Recluse. I play it on repeat a lot in the car as it is. Something about it that tugs at the heartstrings - It's not even the words, just something in the melody line that has a nostalgic sadness to it.
