I'm happy for the boys, they deserve these accolades. But I wish they'd just say it's because of the Hip. There's tonnes of environmentalists and First Nations advocates that have done much more for their causes than GD. Being in the greatest rock and roll band of all time (and you thought the Dylan comparisons were outlandish) is enough to name your town stuff after him and give him government awards, you don't need to justify it otherwise.

Please, for the love of God, make sure there is a high water line mark somewhere that states "Up To Here"
Should be a warning sign about "no swimming past the drop off" as well :thumb:

Maybe a thermometer installation labelled "Lake fever" and an "information" sign that simply reads "Yer not the ocean"

The new Gord Edgar Downie Swimming Pier at Breakwater Park in Kingston honours Gord's commitment to water issues.
Between 2004 and 2017, Gord helped unite 2-million people around a shared love of water. This is the Swim Drink Fish Community.
Founded in 2001, Swim Drink Fish is a growing movement of people who desire swimmable, drinkable, fishable water for everyone. This live performance uses Gord’s own words to show how he - and all of us - go from understanding our unique, personal connection to water to being part of a global community.
- Songs and Performers
Song #1: Chancellor led by Andy Maize
Song #2: Trick Rider led by Paul Langlois
Song #3: Wheat Kings featuring Andy Maize, Sarah Harmer, Paul Langlois, and Aaron Comeau

Gord’s words read by: Tanis Rideout
Introduction by: Mark Mattson
- Words by Gord Downie
- Excerpts from Reading #1: Gord’s Watermark
I always come back to The Lake.
I was born and raised on the northeastern shores of Lake Ontario,
where the Lake meets the Rideau, the Cataraqui and the St. Lawrence Rivers. I fished and swam and sailed and skated there. As Neil Young sang, “All my changes were there.”
It was by the Lake, as a child, where I had my first awakenings. It is where I learned to love nature. And it is where I first felt the strong, immutable desire to try and describe the feelings I was feeling.
But times change and one can become disconnected from even big
things, I lost the Lake somehow, or my feelings for it were harder to find; time and distance and I let the Lake get taken away. The 'Toiletization' of the Lake was well underway; unstoppable pollution, beach closings, shrinking wetlands, species besieged; bottled water, chain-link fences, The Lake was at the beginning of unacceptable and I felt powerless to do anything. I became afraid to look. I tried not to think about it. But I couldn't stop thinking about it, even though the Lake now seemed to belong to someone else.
- Excerpts from Reading #2: Gord’s Call
The Lake belongs to all of us - it is part of the Commons, the public
trust. It is mine and yours and yours. It doesn't belong to some rich uncle, some industrialist, a government. It doesn't belong to the Polluter.”
It resonated with me - It was 'The Call' - now I knew. I had worried and
wondered who is going to protect this Lake?
I will.
Me and everybody else who hears the murmurs, the soft pleas from
somewhere deep - Everybody who wonders what that restless uneasy feeling is - It's 'The Call'.
-Excerpts from Reading #3: Gord’s Reason we are Here
I worry about the Lake. Always. I figure by celebrating it, by telling
people about it, by singing its praises, I can help keep it in people's minds. When they forget about it, they turn their back to it -- it stops existing. Except it doesn't.
We are here for the Natural World.
We are here to honour the people in our lives (minds) who put us in touch with the Natural World in the first place
These people probably never referred to it as 'the environment'
They are Your Father
or your Mother,
Grampa ,
a Teacher,
your Younger Self,
Your child
- Gord’s Conclusion
Everybody in this room if asked; “Do you want to pour bad stuff into
the Lake?” “Do you believe in pollution?” Anybody would answer an emphatic
‘No’.
No one wants to make the world a worse place.
It doesn’t mean they don’t make the world a worse place.
We need the courage to believe that all waters can be swimmable
drinkable fishable.
It’s so simple. It’s the minimum. It’s what everybody should
have.
You know why you’re here. Get your antlers out of the thickets, take
journey-sized steps and Honour our Teachers.
because this lake, this natural world, belongs to all of us and all our
friends;
Swimmable, drinkable, fishable water.
I'd like to do it.
I know there are people in this room who want to do it.
So let's do it.
"We're forced to bed, but we're free to dream"

I was laughing at all the memes, then I read the post above and watched part of the video and started crying. It comes back in such strong waves sometimes.

Great video. Sarah Harmer's version of Morning Moon with the backup choir is absolutely heavenly. Made me tear up.
