Dusted off my Doors albums this week for the first time in years. They were one of the first bands I became obsessed with in my mid-teens (along with U2, Zeppelin, and G n'R). My dad had a couple of their albums on vinyl, which got the ball rolling. From there I gobbled up everything else, including live bootlegs, books, posters, t-shirts, and whatever else I could get my hands on. Once I discovered bands like the Hip, etc.., my interest in the Doors waned and they fell off my radar for a number of years. But I still love them. The other night I was watching the documentary "When You're Strange", which sparked a desire to revisit their catalogue. Strange Days always was, and still is, my favorite Doors record.

Hearing the Tom Petty 40th anniversary tour announcement has me re-digging up a couple LP's. I still remember my first time hearing "The Waiting", was around 11 at the time and I went right out and bought the album. My older brother was supposed to take me to see him in Toronto (with opening act Split Enz), but something came up and we couldn't get there. Would have been my first concert ever.

My fav Petty album. "The Best of Everything" is probably my favourite Petty track ever.

Love the live "Pack Up The Plantation" album from that tour. If you can hunt that down in a record store, grab it!

Had this on tape and CD, but recently picked it up on vinyl, so rediscovering how great an album this was. Principle of Moments will always be my favourite solo album, but this has some great tracks on here as well. Must also give a nod to Mighty Rearranger, that was a killer solo effort too.

Not so much an album -- I came across a book on the history of MuchMusic, which is pretty funny and has a lot on 80s and 90s Canadian music. I was a teen/late teen at the time, and one band that was huge on Much and I despised, was The Northern Pikes. Reading about them, went to Spotify and listened to a fair number of tracks. Not sure why they earned such venom from me, catchy pop songs that in terms of production stand the test of time for the most part. I think it as mostly a case of played to death and unavoidable.

The really weird thing is I've been in record stores around the world (UK, Spain, and in the southern States) where a customer has asked the clerk about The Northern Pikes. I don't think they had too much of a career outside of Canada, but for whatever reason when I'm in a store someone one asking about them. I finally asked one guy in the US why we was looking he'd been a fan and I guess there are some copies of Secrets of the Albili on green vinyl.

The Pikes were a great band. Snow in June and Secrets of the Alibi are two of my favorite Canadian albums of all time. I remember recording a live show of theirs from St. John's, Newfoundland on Muchmusic in 1990. I probably watched that thing at least 30 times. Here's the entire show:

Is This Live -- written by Christopher Ward. It has some interesting things about the early days of MuchMusic, VJs, band interviews and then memories from the bands about being on Much and making videos. I'd forgot how it really brought a lot of new music to me as a teen. There's a few small sections on The Hip.

I can understand how someones early 1990's opinion of the Northern Pikes might be negative if formed by MuchMusic and radio play (as it was for me initially as well). One of the singles off Snow in June, "She Ain't Pretty", got overplayed and frankly it is an annoying song. It was probably a good choice for a single with the goal of shifting units as it's catchy, but for me it doesn't hold up to repeated listenings like the rest of the album does. I skip that song every time. I also don't think it's particularly representative of the rest of the album which stylistically varies quite widely, touching on hard rock, bluegrass, folk, country, pop, etc. When it comes to dismissing albums based on singles I think it's in the ball park of the dismissal of U2's No Line on the Horizon based on "Get on your Boots" and REM's Out of Time based on "Shiny Happy People" (two songs I also skip on albums that I love), although probably not to the same extent as those two.
