Creating a Gord Downie "Best of" Album
#1

Gord has quietly amassed an outstanding body of solo work. I would be interested in seeing what people consider to represent the best of his solo tunes. I thought one way to do this would be to "create" a Gord Downie "Greatest Hits" album. I realize this is a complete misnomer since he really has only 4-5 total songs that have made their way on to radio, none of which lit the charts on fire. However, in the spirit of celebrating his work, it might be fun to do. He has 5 solo albums so the arbitrary ground rules would be a 15 song album containing what you consider to be the best 3 songs each from Coke Machine Glow, Battle of the Nudes, The Grand Bounce, The Conquering Sun, and Secret Path. Here's mine:

1. Chancellor
2. The Never-Ending Present
3. Yer Possessed

4. Steeplechase (recut with the last half of Who by Rote included and the hockey play-by-play and post-game interview dropped)
5. Christmastime in Toronto
6. Pascal's Submarine

7. The Drowning Machine
8. Yellow Days
9. Retrace

10. Budget Shoes
11. Crater
12. The Conquering Sun

13. The Stranger
14. Secret Path
15. Haunt Them, Haunt Them, Haunt Them

Love it. Here we go...

1. Chancellor
2. Lofty Pines
3. Canada Geese

4. Figment
5. Pascal's Submarine
6. Steeplechase

7. The East Wind
8. Yellow Days
9. Retrace

10. One Good Fast Job
11. Budget Shoes
12. Demand Destruction

13. The Stranger
14. 7 Matches
15. Secret Path

In my opinion, Battle of the Nudes is the weak link here. Almost every other album it was hard to narrow it down to just three. For BotN, it was hard to pick three in total.

We only overlap by four songs but that album above is still a fantastic track listing. Speaks to the strength of his solo work.

Trick Rider makes my double album of Gord's Gold, to be released 5 years from now and to include tracks off his next four solo albums that are already "in the can".

Trick Rider is a great song but CMG has a lot of standout tracks. If TR was on Battle of the Nudes, it would only be second to Steeplechase for me.

For me, picking three off The Grand Bounce is impossible. I love that album. I want to add The Dance and Its Disappearance to my list above.
