I also want to mention how very "Canadian" it is that Gord and the band for the most part are not doing any press.

If this was a US band they would be on Good Morning America and milking it for all it was worth.

Dignified.

Really? You don't think there are Canadian reporters that wouldn't love to sit down and get that exclusive one hour interview with any band member right now? So they are so wonderful and Canadian that they decided to leave the band alone? Sure there are some that get the need to stay away. But, that has more to do with the band's absolute need for privacy at this moment. Go wrap your patriotism around some other issue. Not this.

I normally respect fully that The Hip are your band because you are Canadian. In this case you just pissed me off.

[Guncho]

You read my post backwards.

The band is not doing any press.

Not the press is not doing any Hip.

I read it right. And my reaction is overstated. I get that they aren't doing any press. But I don't attribute that to being Canadian. That's what I take issue with. Again, I respect that they are Canada's band. But not everything they do is considered a Canadian thing. That is getting on my nerves. He's not doing interviews for a very obvious reason. none of which has anything to do with where they are from. That's my point.

Poster gave me two things to think about that had been gnawing at me:

1) gord clearly has a coping mechanism. It is to satirizes the meaningfulness of his lyrics when performed live in concert. Most noticeable for me on (everything) Scared. He usually spends the first half of the song almost mocking himself and the genuineness of the lyrics he wrote (i feel) before giving himself over to it. It is the phenomenon that birthed Screamo Gord, who thankfully has not been present on this tour.

can you elaborate on this?

[The Darkest Canuck]

hmmmmmm, decent theory

Sloppily? Probably. Well? I don't know. I'll give it some thought and see if I can come up with something representative and comprehensible, rather than just something reprehensible.

For a band that I've followed for somewhere around 30 years, it is amazing how little I know about them -- which is actually refreshing in this era. Right from the start, they've been very guarded about mixing their personal and professional lives. The most press I've seen them do in recent memory was around the NFPA release, which was interesting. Around release day Gord had a set of media interviews where he answered questions about the meaning of songs and theme of the album in the most abstract ways. Then the next day, he did one interview with CBC and told the full story.

Paul and Rob did some press around solo work. I can't think of the last time I saw or read an interview that included Johnny or Gord S....maybe around Phantom Power.

I'm really surprised no one has written a book about them.

I recently read the new book about Joel Plaskett and it was great.

Whomever wrote that back should do it.

That's a friend of mine! He did an amazing job.

I know The Hip have said that they want to hand pick who writes their official book.

Agreed, the Plaskett book is great. Definitely one of the best rock biographies I've read.

As for the Hip, there's a book called "Have Not Been the Same: The CanRock Renaissance" which features an entire chapter devoted to the Hip and their story (as well as a number of other great bands). It's an excellent read and it covers pretty much everything up until around 2000 just before the release of M@W. For now it's the closest thing to a Hip biography that you're gonna get until someone writes their definitive story. I recommend checking it out if you haven't already.

I feel like I have read that book but it's worth another look!

Just placed a hold at the library for it.

Yeah, I second or third that recommendation -- some neat history on bands I knew, some I had forgotten, and others I had never heard of.

Not Hip related, but Canadian music influenced, are two books by Grant Lawrence (CBC broadcaster) -- The Lonely End of the Rink and Adventures in Solitude.

The Internet works in a funny way -- thread starts with the OP with mixed feelings about a show, turns into book recommendations.

I think I might know what you mean. He seems to belittle the meaning, goof around on stage (puff a fake cigar, paddle a boat) while singing very weighty lyrics (except for Fiddler's Green). As though they dont really mean much. But eventually by the end he IS genuine and the emotion does show through. You're perfectly accurate on Scared. He starts off caricaturizing the words, but at the end, on this tour anyway, as the house lights went on he looked at the crowd and meant every single word.

Am I even close to what you were getting at?

[Chris Tanz]

^^ This is very near to the thing that I was trying to express.
