I'll buy anything that Gord releases because I'm an indiscriminate music buyer when it comes to him and the Hip (as I also am with PJ and My Morning Jacket and a few others). However, if the whole album is devoted to exploring the important issue of residential school abuse, I hope it's not done in a "hit 'em hard over the head" manner. Gord has touched on political issues in many songs (Born in the Water, Looking for a Place to Happen, Now the Struggle Has a Name, etc) in the past, most done in a manner that draws attention to the issue without being overly direct (with maybe the exception of the well done Goodnight Attawapiskat). I guess what I'm saying is I hope this isn't Neil Young's "Living with War". I have no problem with vitriol and anger in political songs, I'm just not a fan of the zero subtlety variety (eg. "Let's Impeach the President" from the aforementioned album). I'm hoping Gord gives us at least a little nuance.

So, yeah, basically don't Neil Young it. I respect his views but godDAMN at the end of his 3 hour set at Wayhome, I was about to go out and support Monsanto instead.

Exactly. The Monsanto Years is another great example. Too much over-the-top politicization can be fatiguing!

I would think the pre- Xmas releases from Gord and The Hip would be an essential business move if they want to cash in
There are likely a few hundred thousand extra purchases gonna bemade just based on the summer tour and Gords diagnosis

I think the band would be stupid not to take advantage of the situation. Who here would begrudge them making a bit of extra money for themselves, their familes or Sunnybrook? It's an utterly horrific affair but if Gord can make sure his kids are well taken care of, then he is fully entitled to do that.

Well, the Hip's documentary crew was at every show this tour, so you can expect some kind of release of the MMP tour sometime hopefully in the nearish future. My wish would be that it's the full Kingston show, and then a smattering of highlight songs from other stops through the tour.

I can't blame them for trying to make as much money this year as possible. Think about how many years of income the rest of the band, their families, and the whole crew are going to miss out on once Gord passes. They probably assumed they'd be touring another 10-30 years.

At some point in the future, I'd love for some music business journalist (do they still exist?) to do a story on how much they made on merchandise on this tour. Sure it was only a bit more than a dozen shows, but every show had merch lines 4-5 times anything I've ever seen anywhere else, and it seemed every other person in the arena was wearing a new shirt. Figure 5000 purchases of a $40 shirt (at least) and you've got $200K a night, minimum. Incredible.
And there's nothing wrong with a quick release of a hits album, or any other sort of xmas release to capitalize on the tour. Do what you can, while you can.

For those thinking this is a dirty money grab, many if not most other bands will exploit the fans for every penny they can get. This is a completely different situation and totally justified. Plus we all WANT a documentary and more merch! No one forced anyone to buy a Tshirt or go to the concert. I for one hope they make as much money as they can. They seem like an extremely appreciative and grateful band and if I'm going to give my money to anyone I will happily give them mine. They're not blowing it on strippers and cars. This isn't Kanye West. Lol
As an aside it's pretty sad how certain health charities hit big when it comes to fundraising while others continue into obscurity. From what I can tell, Glioblastoma is about as common as ALS. The Ice bucket challenge made 220 Mill! So far Gord's fund made 225 thousand which is frankly laughable in comparison.
