Did anybody here get Kingston?

hurls15 Wrote:Agreed- quickest way downtown is all the way south on Sir John A, and along King. That route will take you right into the heart of downtown and to Market Square and K-Rock Centre. There will definitely be some road closures in that area that will make driving around Market Square, K-Rock and that part of downtown waaay more congested than usual (which is not that congested relatively speaking). Anyone staying at the Holiday Inn or Confederation Place might want to get there and parked early.

I have a feeling that trying to find parking anywhere downtown is going to be crazy starting on the Saturday afternoon. Free Kingston transit or cabs will be the way to go, to say nothing of being able to enjoy a few beverages that night.

King also takes you right to Queens without having to go downtown too, which is nice.

You can try to win them.

Dana, I'm flying into buffalo and driving. Drive stateside south of the lake. Cross in the 1000islands then backtrack a bit.
Don't fuck with the 401.

Exactly what I am doing. You know, minus the crazy flying from Florida part.

This time of year you can flirt with the 401, just watch out for the jack-knifed 18 wheelers every few kms.

Be gentle with her and if you're not going at least 140km/h in the fast lane best to move over..

I just imagine the traffic from the GTA is going to be stupid.

There is also a Poker Run in Kingston the same weekend.

"The 1000 Islands Poker Run in Kingston Ontario is fast approaching, and with exciting news that “The Tragically Hip” has confirmed their final performance at the K-Rock Centre Saturday night, therefore hotel rooms are going to be in very short supply!"

The buddy I am going to the show with booked the Delta Waterfront just after the tour was announced. He got a rate of $169 (government rate). He received an email confirmation from Delta a few days ago that quoted the room at $499! After some angry phone calls they came around and re-confirmed the $169, but the point is they are cashing in big time on this weekend, as I'm sure every other hotel and restaurant will be.

My concern is that if we don't arrive in Kingston (coming from Ottawa) until early afternoon it's going to be impossible to get into a bar/restaurant. I guess a 12-pack of Export and a park bench would do Big Grin

Good luck finding a park bench

I tried booking several hotels in Kingston before the tour was publicly announced and most were sold out already.

To be honest I didn't know either until my buddy said "there's a poker run in Kingston that weekend..." and I looke dit up.

A poker run is an organized event where participants, usually using motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, boats, snowmobiles, horses, on foot or other means of transportation must visit five to seven checkpoints, drawing a playing card at each one. The object is to have the best poker hand at the end of the run. In the case of Kingston, I'm pretty sure it's boats, as in those kickass speed boats. This Kingston event is a pretty big deal as people from across North America will be showing up.
