(Poll) First impression favourite?
#16

Chris, 'Tired' is obviously a horrible choice for a single and for one's 'favourite' song on the record, but it *is* a genuine grower, at least to my ear. On first listen, there seems to be no melody there. But repeat listenings reveal the structure, as well as the fact that the song has a nice, distinctive 'feel' to it. It fits very well on the album.

I like how Tired is a kind of juxtaposition of "trailer park boys" slang set to a jaunty, almost jazz song. I don't love the song, but I like it in the context of the album.

I voted In a World and I'm shocked it only has six choices.

I'm really loving 'Here, in the dark'. Love its rambling flow. On my first listen through Machine was the standout favourite. Overall I think the album is more fantastic than I'd hoped. I agree with reviews that say its a less accessible sound to a casual fan maybe, but after listening a few times through, I like this more than anything since World Container. The album has some great standouts and a ton of mood and soul.

But Man and Machine are just as amazing. and they sound perfect together played back to back, as they were originally conceived. I've tried reconfiguring the tracklist for this but its been a frustrating experience. This is the best I could come up with.

Man
Machine
What Blue
In A World Possessed By The Human Mind
Tired as f**k
Here, in the Dark
Great Soul
Hot Mic
Ocean Next
In Sarnia

you know, I think they were actually written in the reverse order. man was a jam that followed machine.

Agree to this and to the comment that follows it -- contextually not terrible (and, let's face it, it's Hip so "not terrible" is relative), but one's favourite song? on this album? Cmon. That's just contrarianism. I challenge that one voter to a duel!

It's like my comment in the other thread about ranking the EP anywhere but last. There is no universe where the EP is better than WATS, WC, NFPA, etc. Subjectivism be damned. More duel challenges!

I think Tired as Fuck holds up pretty well against most of the record, and offers it's own little unique thing.

Sure, but this poll was posed as absolutes. Favourite song. That means most liked. TaF isn't terrible and it is good in context and has unique things -- agree -- but are you going to war with TaF and leaving Machine, Great Soul, Here in the Dark, Hot Mic, Ocean Next, or Man behind? Never. That's just being contrary. If you think that, you think you stink. (Look at me, driving up the vote count for TaF! Maybe I voted for it myself!)

I'm obviously being over the top. You can have any first impression favourite you like. Just don't pick TaF.
